to Sequoia2003.. I went to college many years ago at Western in Bellingham.... lived in downtown Bellevue for a while.... now I live in wonderful T- town
Actually back in high school my friend bought a used late 80's Ranger 5 speed in navy and silver color.... 2 wd....
the guy still drives it after 11 years!!! I cant believe it.... its a piece of crap but he still drives it....
btw when I worked for Lexus of Bellevue a couple years ago... Michael O Brien... the owner of the dealerships chose to drive a Tundra.... he could have driven a LS430 or an SC430 or an LX470.... but no.... he chose to drive a good old pick up truck!!! A 2000 Tundra Limited!!! Of course when the Sequioa came out he jumped ship and went to the Sequoia... Im sure he'll be driving the GX470 as soon as that shows....
So... with your opinions about a unit body design... what do you think will handle off road conditions better... the 4Runner or a $60 -70,000 LandRover Range Rover??? You know the Range Rover is a unit body or as they like to call it a monocoque design (Acura NSX is monocoque )
Perhaps the most significant design innovation lies under the skin. The new steel monocoque chassis is much stronger than the separate body and frame that it replaces, improving off-road ability and on-road refinement. For the team, "tough luxury" was never just a cosmetic aesthetic, it was a performance guarantee.
Hmmm perhaps unit body design can be better off road with the right technology?? Im just asking?? =)
Ok Acura_Bossman, you may have a very valid point that needs looking into.
One thing in my defense, the new Range Rover is almost $80k. My father in law works at one of the local Land Rover dealers and thats what he told me. I would like to see if the Camel Team will be driving Range Rover's off road, as they are currently using the Discovery as it has the truck like frame.
One area of concern on the steel monocoque chassis. 99% of all cars built today are built using this technology. Also, if steel monocoque chassis is so strong, how come Ford F350 Dually trucks don't use them? Ok, bad example Ford is about 10 years behind in auto technology.
Yeah iknow you can get 2 Runners for the price of 1 Rover.... kinda stupid to think about that... I know youre probably one of the 10% that actually takes your vehicles way off road but I wonder how many people would really take their 80K Rover off road..... then again if you can afford that Im sure you could care less....
If your father in law is very knowledgeable about Land Rovers why dont you ask him what his opinion on that monocoque design is....
Is it superior to the body on frame design?
As far as Discovery goes.... I think Land Rovers just trying to bring some attention to it so people actually buy that thing..... some of the technology on that thing is older then the Fords
Actually my father in law owns a 2000 4Runner and he has told me numerous times that all though the Land Rovers are incredible rigs, he still likes his 4Runner over any of the Land Rovers.
Originally posted by Sequoia2003 Though Mitsubishi have great vehicles and some very inspiring ideas, their SUV's are Unibody Construction. Unibody Construction is not well suited for serious off road capability or towing. Besides, their web site says they start at $31k. For another $ 3k I can get the V8 4Runner.
Yes, the 2.3 is a bullet proof. As is the 302.
I am talking about the Montero Sport. It is a body on frame SUV based off of the old Montero, not the funky looking new one.
I am going up to Mt Baker this weekend though and up to Whistler in Dec!! cant wait....
WHISTLER!! My Board has been there, but not me. Right after my brother told me he was going AND that there were no more open spots, he asks to borrow my board!!! The nerve....
I cannot believe anybody would waste time trying to compare a Pilot to a
4Runner.I know what my 4Runner is capable of and it can take the family to the mall or ski slopes and also tow my 6000 lb boat without breaking a sweat.
I can also put it into 4WD low and do extreme off roading. If anybody wants to do a Pilot vs 4Runner shootout of towing and off roading I would be more than glad to take you up on it !!! If you want to just go the mall or soccer field I can do that also.
I agree though, it isn't an easy comparison between the two. While they may be similar in size, they are constructed totally different. I think a better comparison would be the 4 runner vs the pathfinder.
I could have bought an MDX never mind the urgly noisy looking Pilot but I chose the 4runner because of its outdoor and ruggedness, towing capability, high and low range 4WD, besides its a Toyota. Toyota is the king of japanese's car why bother with second best.
However, Toyota is loosing my future bussinesses because lack of MANUAL TRANNY, I do not like auto one bit.
I looked at the 4runner, the pathfinder, the pilot, etc, etc etc before I chose to get nothing less than a 4runner.
Keep in mind I have been a long time loyal Honda customer, and cannot say enough about how good they have treated me. I Own an Acura car, and a Honda motorcycle, both have been more reliable than you could imagine.
Heres the problem, Honda does not make certain types of purpose built vehicles, trucks, SUVs, and Acura no longer makes sports coupes or sports cars.
Comparing the 4runner to a pilot is like comparing a 4runner to an all wheel drive minivan.
Honda makes excellent cars, the best, but when it comes to trucks, and SUVs Toyota are the best hands down.
If you dont go offroading, if you dont tow anything, if you dont have to deal with snow that much, if you want more interior space the Pilot is your vehicle.
Personally I bought my 4runner because I have a great reliable car for use on the road, when I dont need as much room, or when the roads are clear and dry.
Depends what you need, and what you want as to what you should get.
