Cool Best year for the 4runner?

Anyone have an opinion on what model years were best for the 4runner? My personal favorite is the 1999 in the Limited trim. Heres why: full time 4wd which is very handy in wet/snowy weather in CT. A big #2 is the available locking rear diff. huge bennefit off road. Number 3 is what it doesn't have, the electric nannys ie. VSC which I believe take away from a (good) drivers ability.

2003 is the best year that would be 4th Gen
    V8 engine, possible SC
    5speed auto
    auto 4wheel
    x-Reas suspension

3rd gens are good ones to, I like the 2000-2002 cause of the face lift on the front bumper

    Default Hope!

Any hardcore wheeler like myself knows that the best 4Runner is the 1st generation of the 1984's and 1985's. Why, 4:10 rear ends, inline 4 banger, solid fron and rear axles, manual locking hubs, NO electronic 4 wheel drive crap and a removable top.

I agree about the 84 and 85's but My opinion was based on all around use in mind not strickly off road. I drive a 93 sr5 Xtracab v6 and think its one of the best vehicles ever produced by toyota. It has 200K miles and still on the original clutch, tranny, engine ect. Hate to admit it but belive its far better because its made in Japan the american toys just aren't the equal of the Japanese models. Btway are the gen 4 4runners still made in Japan? If I could change anything on my truck though it would be a little more power and some sort of traction aid like a ltd slip rear. Because it seems little dogish when cars now have twice HP and in rain it needs weight in the bed. But I'm nitpicking its reliability makes up for any minor problems. Happy Thanksgiving all!!!

    Default Think again!

I used to think that too! My friend who is senior manager for Boeing told me that they visit some of Toyota plants for manufacturing process training. He told me that the Toyota Camry built here in the USA has won more awards in quality and has less problems then their Japanese built Camry counter part.

Yes, I too love the 2nd Generation 4Runner, one of the best looking 4Runners ever. Only thing I really liked about the 3 generation was the more powerful V6.

I just wish Toyota would build a 4Runner like they did in 1984.
