I was under the impression that Toyota used anti-knock sensors to address any kind of pinging. Knock sensor- microphone type device that produces a voltage when it "hears" a detonation knock. The computer retards the timing when this condition is met. On my ES300 they were under the intake. I had to change one.

Pinging is bad. I would find out why it is pinging.
