Re: FJ WINDSHIELDS and ROCKS don't mix
I didn't read all the responses yet so forgive me if I repeat someone else's response.
If your windshield ever starts to crack you have at least two options to keep the crack from propagating. You can call a windshield repair (not replacement) service to come out and repair the crack. They will drill the ends of the crack out and fill the holes with a UV epoxy. The repair is pretty good and sometimes you can barely make out the location where it was repaired.
Another thing you can do (I had to do it once myself) is drill the ends of the cracks yourself. I had a crack that was taking off once and it was going to be over the weekend before I could get a repair guy out to work on it. I didn't want the crack to get bigger (because once the crack gets too big they can't fix it) so I purchased a very small glass drill and drilled the cracks myself. The key is to only drill through the first layer of glass. Do not drill all the way through. The glass is a sandwich of two layers of glass and a flexible material between them. Penetrate the first layer of glass until you reach the middle layer. Fill the holes with a low viscosity two-part (clear) epoxy with a syringe and let it cure. Use a razor blade to cut the excess epoxy flush with the windshield. The drill should be no bigger then .050".
