Went to Sears to buy tires for my wife's Honda a few months ago. The tires were "on sale" so I went in, got a price, signed the work order, and they replaced the tires.
When the work was done, they tried to charge me $100 more than what they had quoted me. Why? Because they forgot to include the Mounting and Balancing charge into the original quote. I told them that I should only have to pay what I was quoted, but they said, No, I had to pay the whole thing.
Why couldn't they just void the M&B charge? Because "the computer won't let them do that."
Can't a manager override that?
Apparently not. It is "to keep employees from giving away merchandise or services for free."
I did demand to speak to a manager and did speak to one. Not a real manager, mind you; some young manager trainee who they put in charge that Sunday afternoon so the other more senior managers could play golf. She did not even offer to make some kind of adjustment. Basically, it was "Call our 800 number if you wish to register a complaint."
Since they had me by the Short Hairs, I ended up paying the extra $100 so I could take the car home.
As if that wasn't bad enough, when I went outside to pick it up, there were scuff marks all over the white paint. Seems the kid who did the tire installs didn't bother to take much care with the air hose and the impact wrench; instead swinging back and forth over the hood and the truck and banging it against any body panel he could.
I went back in, spoke to the Service manager (who had refused to waive the extra charge) and raised Holy Hell right there in the store, much to the gawking stares of other customers and the embarrassed chagrin oft he Service manager. He grudgingly got a can of polishing compund and Turtle Wax off the shelf, and under my watchful eye, proceeded to buff out all the marks on the car.
I did call their 800 number. I'm still waiting on my refund for the M&B charge.
