That's because the particles are in the filter, exactly where they should be. To think these shavings are floating around in the engine is craziness. The only time I've ever seen shavings in a new engine is stuck to the oil plug magnet, which just catches them before they get back to the filter. The only advantage I see to early first oil changes is removing the filter that could become plugged due to excess break-in material. But frankly, if you're filter is plugged in 5k miles your engine is not going to last long anyway.
