Re: Camshaft Failures in new 5.7?
Well so I'm new to this web site and in running through the 100's of posts regarding this issue I have missed certian facts as well as have seen them twisted around.
Reading the press release it never says anything about the actual numbers of vehicles affected just says early production, and that there are reported to have been 20 known failures, and somewhere reports that as a very low percentage in warranty numbers, which is true. I take that as a weak statement by such a large manufacturer.
As have been in the manufacturing world, and know how parts are tracked through the supply lines and such. Whether or not they can tell you when the problem started with a part supplied by a vendor, in this case we'll assume the beginning, they would know when it ended. If they identified an issue, and the supplied parts are now "known good" pieces, they certainly know when the issue was corrected and would have a list of VIN numbers prior to that date.
In todays world of computers and bar coding, they know what parts went into what engine as well as where that engine assembly went.
In a case like this where it was a launch of a new product, waiting to find out what vehicles are affected, that by means of waiting for them to fail, is ridculous.
You would think in a case such as this, stepping up to the plate and being proactive rather than reactive would be more advantagious. Warranty is a wonderful thing to boast that they would replace the motor as an assembly and take care of everything. What does that mean? They have to. What never gets covered in a warranty situation is the time you're stuck on the road and hopefully it's not in the middle of the night, and you need to get your trailer towed also, and your wife's sitting there with her words of wisdom regarding this "new truck" which I, personally walked into the dealer and wrote a check for.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I have an early production truck.
