I too thought the same thing when I saw the picture of the new and old calipers. They look smaller, especially with out the extension on the upper right side of the caliper.
My understanding, after repeated discussions with my Service Manager during brake servicing, was that the old assembly just wasn't capable of dissipating the extreme heat being generated. Back then, the solution recommended by one of the engineers was to install a larger assembly, with a larger mass to help absorb and dissipate the heat away from the pads and rotor.

Anyway, in the past, my brake problems occurred after driving in the mountains either fully loaded or while towing my small pop-up. I took my fully loaded truck and trailer hunting in the mountains earlier this month and experienced no problems. I did drop it down into second gear while descending the steeper grades, which I seldom did before as I had always heard the saying that it was cheaper to replace brakes than the transmission, but after all the headaches I’ve gone through with the brakes I decided to change my driving style.

Hopefully, they've finally figured it out. I would think, just based on the cost of parts and labor to perform the TSB that they would have done extensive testing prior to releasing this fix. . . I guess only time will tell.
