If it's like the Prius (Hybrid synergy drive) and I believe it is, it isn't a CVT transmission. It emulates it but that's it. Actually there isn't any transmission at all. It's one engine, two motors and a torque splitter unlike a CVT belt and colapsible pulley system. There are a couple links in the Prius section that describe the whole system. It's worth the read, sorry you will have to find the link.
As a way of comparison on Prius mileage and TCH, I recently got back from a 3500 mile trip in my Prius. I crossed the continental divide three times, the AC on for the whole trip. I averaged 47.06 at an average speed of 75-80. My around town mileage is similar driving it like a normal car. TCH must be considerably less due to extra weight etc. I almost bought a TCH but the small trunk was not acceptable. Still not sure which one I would like best.
