I felt the same way and ended up with a set of the Geolanders IIs. At just over a $100 (265/75R16), I just couldn't see paying 50% more for the BFGs.
I've got close to 20K on mine, and they've provided excellent traction on and off the road, they balance out well, and they're wearing very well. The only downside would be that I found them to be a bit noisier than the stock BFGs they replaced, with some "humming" at speeds above 40 mph, but it's nothing like a mud tire.
