OK, it turns out....that it is probably impossible to watch DVDs on the front nav screen. A single pulse causes the screen to switch to the map screen. Even a single pulse every 30 seconds will do it. A pulse makes it think it's doing 1km/h and that's enough to cause the map to come up.
Project gone bad!
