Default Re: DIY: All NAV Functions All The Time without Firmware Downgrade!

As I have said before, I seriously doubt that any fixed voltage will work to recreate the ECU speed sensor signal when the vehicle is stopped. I tested this when trying to unlock the NAV functions and it didn't work so I see no reason why it would work for the RSES video.

I believe there is a very low or high freqeuncy digital signal on the wire which is not readable with a standard voltage meter. Someone with an oscilloscope should be able to test this but I don't have one of those. Even if we could confirm the exact signal it is unlikely that we could easily duplicate it with devices that are built by novices using over the counter parts.

The beauty of the speed pulse generator device is that it does properly emulate a speed pulse signal which is adjustable between 0-6 kmph depending on what resistors and potentiometers are used, and it is fairly cheap / easy for novices to build from locally available parts. Unfortunately the NAV needs to see a pulse at least every 30 seconds in order to keep the functions unlocked, and the RSES video will shutoff briefly during each pulse.

My only remaining theory is that the signal when stopped is actually a very narrow (short) pulse, so brief that it does not display on the meter or diagnostic screen, and that it only comes in intervals of 1 pulse every 20-30 seconds. My very first device allowed the pulse width to be adjusted with a 1K potentiometer and I did a little testing with it, but I never tested it any further once I saw that the wider pulses were better for the purpose of unlocking the NAV functions.

So I might build a new device with an adjustable pulse width spanning a wider range, and then test a slow narrow pulse to see if this will enable both the NAV functions and the RSES video. First I need to complete my mod to enable the second video input on my NAV, however, since I have a DC without the RSES unit. And to be honest this isn't a huge priority for me right now since I am already watching full video on the NAV via the rear camera input, and my existing speed pulse generator device enables all NAV functions while in motion.

I am also building several additional video screens for various places inside the cab, which will only cost about $35 each when completed, and they will enable lots of other uses including my blind spot cameras, trailer camera, tire/road views, and audio as well.
