The reason I would not recommend popping it out is because you could damage the clip on the inside of the dash that holds the GBS in place. At least with the floor shifter the process of removing the pocket panel is a one step and worth not damaging your vehicle.

I thought about doing it this way but the space was a little tight for my hands and a socket wrench.
