At first I thought the same thing. I would have sworn it was coming from the dash and window area. Even after taking the dash apart and having the wife drive it while I hunted, I could have sworn more than once it was coming from the dash behind the clock. The dash is pretty hollow in there and I think the noise echos off of all the plastic and tricks your ears. Once we got home and I accidently grabbed that piece, there was no doubt I had found the problem.
When you reach your hand up there you will be about elbow deep into the dash, so you end up pretty close to the window when you grab that plastic piece, so I think thats why I was thinking also that it was where the dash meets the window. To get to it without taking the radio or gloveboxes out, lay on your back (or side) on the pass. side floor and with your right arm reach up into the dash thru the opening next to the center console. You'll find the piece sticking out as you get closer to the top of the dash. Pull on the piece and it should make the noise.
With the radio out and a clear view of the inside I could easily tell it was the two pieces of plastic rubbing where the vent from the outside meets the vent going to the inside ducts. Those two ducts rubbing caused me 7 months of grief. But once they were pushed tight together the noise quit.
I'm not saying yours is the same noise, but give that a shot and see if you can duplicate the sound.
