Here's my appproach:

Solo cordless detector with suction cup mount in the upper left corner of the windshield. Fully out of view from all outside angles except head-on.

I'm covering 2000 miles a month and 2 AA batteries last about two weeks. The sun visor makes contact with this at about 85% of it's range, but it moves away nicely.

The only problem is, the LCD screen on my Blackberry sets off the laser detector. And I do worry that it might become shrapnel if the curtain airbag ever deploys - probably the least of my worries if that happens.
