OK, I have had my two gloves boxes out about 3 times, maybe 4, chasing rattles. The first rattle fix was easy; it was a real bad rattle/vibration on the right side of the dash. Some foam stuffed up underneath the dash at the right end, behind the glove boxes, where the dash meets the window/inside firewall, fixed that loud one.
But then I had a persistent tick/rattle from underneath the dash near the clock/temp display. A slight bump would make it go, and a sharp turn would also. It sounded almost like a screw rolling around or a cable vibrating. Several tries using the fix Jumbo Jet artfully described, and that has worked for several folks, just didn't work for me. I have an SR5 and I think the ducting is slightly different from a Limited, which I think Jumbo’s truck is. I don’t think mine had the little black tab in his picture that he shook to make his rattle happen. But I tried stuffing foam around anyway, with only the two glove boxes out. No luck.
So I bit it and removed the cup holder, the cig lighter panel, A/C controls, and radio. Bingo. Right behind the radio are the wires for the clock, temp display, alarm, etc. The wires are encased in a flat fairly hard plastic
liner that dangles down a bit and barely sits on part of the defroster ducting. That was my rattle. The plastic wire casing bouncing and sliding on the defrost duct. I lined the top of the duct with foam, and encased the wiring in some. Put it all back together and road tested with no noises.
I hope for the '08 guys' sake someone at Toyota looks at some of these complaints and fixes, and takes note. This would be an easy factory Q/C fix. Kaizen Toyota ....
