When I bought my 1997 4Runner with 145k on it last year I would recommend the following.
Have a Toyota dealer look it over if possible. Ask them what Toyota dealer they bought it from and hopefully had it serviced at. You can get the VIN number and call the dealer and they should give you the service history.
Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced, I believe the first was at 60k then at 120k and so on.
There was a recall on replacing the rear springs.
Check the rear seals, mine was starting to leak diff. fluid onto the rear brakes.
Those were the major things that I can think of.
