Re: 2008 Transmission Problems Too!
I have a 2007, 4 cyl. Camry that has the EXACT same problem. I have been dealing (patiently) with my Toyota service people and have heard every line from the "How to be a good little Toyota customer service employee without saying anything above your paygrade" handbook - "the car is still within the break-in period; these cars are smart, it's only getting used to how you drive; it's probably just low on transmission fluid, we'll take care of it because we're here for you......".
So, you can imagine my surprise when I received a call TODAY from my friendly Toyota service person telling me that he had an answer but it was not one that I was going to like (any answer is better than no answer, right?). He was informed by the Oracle that Toyota is aware that there is an issue and it may have something to do with the torque converter but he wasn't exactly sure. Unfortunately, there's nothing he can do for me right now, but if I want, I can call back in a "couple a months" to see if it's been fixed. I had hoped that if I was patient and let them do their jobs they would look out for me and do the right thing because I was the customer. STUPID. He was right, that was not the answer that I was looking for. Apparently I need to be a bit more proactive.
Here's the symptoms: I drive rural roads (40-50 mph) an hour a day and the shudder happens routinely at ~1200 rpm, as you accelerate off a coast. It is more prominent on an incline. During this type of commute it is relatively constant. The car received an ECM reprogram in October that seemed to reduce the hesitation but didn't really seem to affect the shudder.
Honestly, I have no problem waiting for a computer fix (assuming that's all it is). However, I'm I'm pretty sure that the shudder that occurs cannot be good for the mechanical parts of the transmission (it could literally shake the dentures out of a blue hair). I'm no service technician, but by the look on the face of the one who was riding with me I'm pretty sure that he agrees. They took a "snap-shot" of the car while it was occuring and sent that off to Toyota, so they are aware of it.
I will be trying to reach out to someone from Toyota and would greatly appreciate any contact information for a Toyota representaive who is actually interested in standing by their product, is professional, and can make a decision. Too much to ask for? I hope not. I would also be interested in how other dealerships are dealing with this and whether any resolutions have been reached.
Thanks.
