I do not know the answer to your first question but can help with the second:

The posts on your switch should be labelled (or the packaging should indicate) that one post is power (positive), earth/ground (negative) and load. The wire in question should connect at the power and load posts and the earth/ground post should be connected to a grounding point on the truck.
