I was thinking about cutting at the opposite angle also, but I think it would leave a larger opening on the hook that might rattle back and forth.
I too had been thinking about this mod for a while and I finally got around to tackling it this week. The first time it came to me was when I removed the interior of the truck to wrap it in sound deadener.
Hopefully I will have the amps installed this weekend, although things always come up and take longer than you anticipate.
