If the 06 Avalon antenna placement is like our 2003 Camry the antenna will be located just under the rear package tray at the left side and is visible from the trunk. You might want to double check in your navigation settings menu that the daylight savings setting is set to the on position. Also your signal strength will be higher if there's not an object over it on the package tray.
Maybe another Avalon owner with a newer model than our 03 Camry will pipe in with more info about just where your antenna is.
