Yeah, it does look a little off on the drivers side especially.
Mine is cut, use a piece of black trim along the cut edge and it makes it look pretty good.
Honestly, don't know what I like better, cut or spaced?

As far as a plug for the "time to clean me gauge", you can probably find a small black rubber stopper (cork), the kind the use in the medical field for samples and such.
I think I've even seen them in auto parts stores for blocking off hoses and lines.
