Hey ponyuk, the version of the mod I did this weekend, I purchased the diodes, but did not use them at all.
There is no issue with the 12V going back down the wire. I'm not sure why, but it works, so I'm not too worried. Just make sure you solder the correct wires to each other else you'll get the x-mas tree display (trust me ).

BTW, I didn't do the flip switch like Pedro did either.
