This is a discussion thread titled "Bed covers", within the Aftermarket Products forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I thinking about installing a bakflip tonneau bed cover. Does anyone have one installed and if so comments positive or negative would be helpful. Or another brand that works better. Thanks for the reply.
I looked at many tonneau's before deciding to wait for the Duracover from Durakon (www.durakon.com). It's a one-piece hard ABS tonneau (similar to undercover or armorlid - but better!) with real hinges and rotary latches with a single locking mechanism. I installed it 2 days ago and love it. One note - you must have the bed rails for this cover - it mounts to the rails.
i used to have a top deck fiberglass lid with 2 locks on my access cab. this time around, i decided to go with a retrax for ease of use. it's not as sexy looking a the fiberglass, but with one locking mechanism and single hand operation and multiple lockable positions.....convenience beat out aesthetics by a huge margin. since my truck is black and so is the retrax, it's not too difficult to accept the look.
there are other retractable covers out there with more or less features, but i wanted retrax's reputation and did not want something that would burn a hole in my pocket! (i'm still trying to sew up the last hole!!!)

i would love a tonneau cover but wouldn't get anything but a painted match to my truck bc Bright Blue and chrome with a black cover thrown on would look like crap
dodgenc...Sure glad I red your post. I had ordered Undercover but decided I would check out the Duracover. I emailed factory, who put me in touch with area distributor, who called my local installer and gave him part number and had him call me. Great customer service. IMO, hands down more quality and better look. New Duracover is on order. Thanks again!
I would like to see what you say about the Duracover after you have it for a little while. I've done a little research on it and so far, I have not received very good news.
Well, I've asked a couple of my wholesale vendors and they basically have just indicated that it's not as great as it seems. I would like to hear from actual owners though. So. I'm still doing my homework on this product. I don't think there's too many out there yet so it difficult to gather data.
Retrax is a good cover. I have sold many of them and for the first time, there is a problem with one of them. The customer (Dodge Ram) bought the cover from me but installed it himself. He tells me that there are scratch marks on the cover caused by opening and closing the cover. He has not yet brought the cover to my shop. Now, Retrax advertises that when their cover retracts, it does not roll up upon itself, hence eliminating potential scratches. So, just guessing, either he did not install the cover correctly, something somehow got into the cannister, or perhaps there is a defect. Don't know yet.
Retrax is made of Lexan, which is a type of plastic frequently used in the airline industry. While it is durable, you can scratch it. But, you can scratch ANY tonneau cover. If you order a Retrax, I recommend you buy the optional lock cover (NOT shown below). It will keep junk out of the locking mechanism. The Retrax MAY partially cover your stake holes. However, you can order the cover with the stake holes cut out on the cover. (I'm not sure how that all applies specifically with the new Tundra though.) Other info: Retrax is not spring loaded like many other covers, there is no tailgate piece to install, and does not lock your tailgate when closed, which is no big deal since your tailgate has a lock anyway.
I have done hands on with Retrax and can see the quality. My installer says it is one of his best sellers and has on his personal truck. Thanks again for the input.
