Default Radar Detector

Alright.... between its quick acceleration and its smooth ride at 70+ I am quickly coming to the realization that my Tundra is going to consistently put me at risk for a speeding ticket. Does anyone have any strong feelings about a good mid-range $$ radar detector. I am looking at a Bel Vector 940 .... thoughts?

I have the 200 dollar vector and has never let me down..That's mid range. If the Bel STi can pick KA band over hills I would definitely buy it since there are so many hilly highways and interstates that the police hide behind...

Passport 8500 using stock suction cups to mount to the windshield above the rear view mirror. Take a spare RJ11 (telephone) jack, look up the wiring diagram for this model (clip side up; first two wires are wrapped together and positive, third is blank, and fourth is negative). Then, run this telephone wire under the ceiling liner to a convenient switched power source inside the ceiling/sunglass holder console. I used the large wiring clip for the moonroof, jammed a couple of wires into the back and I now have a radar detector that comes on whenever the truck is powered up.

Passport 8500 x50 at the minimum. If you have the compass/homelink console option, you can hardwire it in by tapping into the maplights. Leave enough slack to mount the detector just below the rear view mirror.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but have a quick question: Are there any "low profile" radar detectors? I had a CHP tell me one time that if you do get pulled over, and they see the radar detector, they are more likely to write you up (because they assume that if you have a detector, you frequently speed so you deserve the ticket). Just would be nice to have a detector that is somewhat hidden or at least less obvious.

Well, Valentine 1 is the best...my friend is installing one on his Mustang GT soon, red, SLP Loudmouth II's, enough said...anyways...i know with the V1 you can buy an optional part that lets u turn the lights off on the main unit and have that up near the rearview mirror, and have the optional piece under the dash or in a hidden location only visible to you.

Thanks for the tip. I will have to check out their web site and get an idea about the setup. How much do they go for?

If you get it from Valentine 1's store...its $399 before tax and shipping. The adapter that lets you turn the main unit on low lighting is $39. https://store.valentine1.com/store/

The several year old Passport 8500 is better than anything that Valentine 1 ever made and they've had several models since including the new 9500i w/GPS. Read the feature list on this new unit and I doubt you'll buy a Valentine 1 after you see what it can do.

The Valentine 1 was a great radar detector a dozen years ago but there have been some great advancements in technology since yet people keep running to the Valentine 1 even though it's 1994's technology. You guys still rockin' your Tandy 286?

Exactly why I bought the passport 8500 x50 because it is a better detector plus gives road condition/emergency vehicle messages.
