This is a discussion thread titled "Which size toolbox for Tundra?", within the Aftermarket Products forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Low-Profile single lid box for my '02 Xtra Cab 4x4 but running into a problem. Seems like the best local contenders are UWS and CDI, (the Lowe's version doesn't have an insulated lid). The CDI model is solid (.080 instead of .063 standard) but I don't know anything about them other than that they're the new brand being carried by my local truck accessory shop. I know the reputation of the UWS and would go with it but the 69" model will hang over just a bit (sticking out straight above the rounded rail caps) and I don't like that idea, while the 66" model is only 54" wide in the actual box, leaving about a 3 1/2' gap on each side in the bed. What is everyone else doing?

I forget which brand I had on my 2003, but I'm pretty sure it was 70". It overhung a bit, but not enough to worry about. I wouldn't go any bigger.

I have a 05 dc and bought a uws box. It fits down under the bed rails. Doesn't sit on top. I could put a tonneau on with no issues. at the moment I don't remember the width but it fits perfect, I mean inside the plastic bedrail covers, barely rubs both sides. Whatever the width of the 05 tundy bed is. Now for the wheel well cutout on the rear facing side of the box is a c-hair not enough soooooo I fixed that. Under the box, inbetween the box and the bed, I cut two lengths of 1" square tubing to the appropriate length. Running with the length of the truck pretty much in line with frame rails. Four or six bolts thru box, 1" square tubing and the bed and you have it. Even raising the box with the tubing still didn't raise it above the bedrails. I did this so there would be room for crap to accumulate in, under and around the box so it would be a bee-ach to clean. It really cleans out well. Well... with a hose and park facing uphill!! I did have to fasten it to the front of the bed,(behind the cab) I just used selftappers. Probably gunna haf to keep checking these ones tho.
And since the way the lid opens, it would hit the front bed rail rubbing paint and just annoying. Soooooo, I drilled some holes and with an old bike chain and some bolts made some..."toolbox-lid-keepers-from-hitting-the-front-of-the-bed-thingies". You know, the things that keep the lid from opening up too far? I can't for the life of me think of what to call them...I will get some pics, its totally TRICK!
Anywho. I love the UWS box but think it could be a little thicker alum. Pretty thin but a great fit!!!
I would rate it a 7 out of ten. I don't know if they come with trays but mine did not.

UWS is pretty good bang for your buck and that's what we sell the most. But, if you want to step up, choose either Weatherguard or RKI (Rawson-Koenig). That's what ALL my commercial accounts buy. They are more expensive, but worth it.
i know they are expensive but weatherguard all the way!
i had my truck broken into to many times and my tools stolen. now with my weatherguard the theaves just walk buy. the aluminum is so thick compared to husky, betterbuilt etc, you can stand on it with no problems. and it has clear powder coat
initially it is more but worth it! p.s. low profile for 07 tundras. i cant see out my back window very well with my regular size.
Unique Truck Accessories makes a box to fit the 1st-Gen Tundra. I have the low profile myself, and it looks and fits great. I have to try and get some pics in my gallery of it, but if you do a search of the company, there's another member who has pics of one.
