While sitting at a red light in beautiful Oakland Ca, this guy in some beat up sedan hits my truck. Before I can react, he is going as fast as he can, in reverse, with a headlight dangling from the grill of his car. He flips a u-turn and disappears. I don't call the cops. They will not come. I just need a new STRONG bumper. The stock unit folded like the tin it is made of. Although it did save the bed of the truck from anything but a few scratches. I have heard that Road armor is hell to deal with. Any suggestions out there for a new rear bumper that will survuve the occasional drive through the 'hood?

Tough Country and South Texas Outfitters make a sturdy rear bumper for the Tundra. They are not the most stylish but they are heavy duty and can make your attackers suffer big time.
Talk to RoundOut (Gary). He had a custom bumper done recently and might be able to help you get the metal cut from his plan, if you have someone to weld it up (or yourself). It's the best design I've seen yet.
Thanks for the tips. The Demello unit looks cool too. Just fyi. Reunel industries makes a nice bumper too. Strong, but not the best looking bumper. It has a 20,000 pound tow rating and a six thousand(!) pound tongue weight rating. There is one Tundra pic on their site. They tell me the unit is custom, but they have the plans and they are easily customized. Reunel Extreme Heavy Duty Bumpers

I called the folks in El Campo Texas who make the Tough Country bumpers, looking for a rear bumper for my 05. They informed me the only Tundra bumpers they sell now are for the 07's. I was hoping to pick one up from them when I visited Houston over the holidays.

do they make a rear bumper that LOOKS good? i have crome bumpers and i swear i can dent my back one with my knee. every time i get near it, it gets dented.. thanks and have a good 1
I just talked to Tim in El Campo and the reason why they were discontinuing for Yota's was due to the front bumper not always have the same attachment points. However, the rears are no problem. The deluxe bumper is $699 and the traditional is $399. You keep your OEM receiver with the traditional, and for the $300 difference, I think that is the way to go, although there is a 3 week wait for that one. The more expensive on is in stock as of today. Hope that helps and good luck!

Bummer, sorry to hear that. Here is another rear bumper option:
The bumper is designed to fold down in a rear impact. That is designed into the brackets. The idea is to absorb energy, not transfer it to the frame and cab. If you were to mount the new bumper on the same factory brackets, the same thing would happen. If you build or buy "heavy duty" brackets, the next rear ending will send all that energy to you in the cab, increaseing the chance/severity of whiplash.
