Has anyone added the factory running boards on after purchase? I want to order the OEM stainless steps. Do you have to do any drilling or have any special tools?
No drilling at all, they are body mount and the holes are already there from the factory. I made the mistake of trying to save some money and bought aftermarket, needless to say I was not happy with what I bought as far as the fit and so on. The factory stainless boards look great and fit like they were made for it! You won't go wrong with buying those. At least you can go and look at them already installed on some new Tundras, they seem to be ordering them that way now.
love them. I got them at cost after the purchase and put them on myself..
They are a must have so you dont ruin the side of the seats getting in and out.
Thanks guys, I'm assuming the hardware is all metric right? Do you remember what tools you used cajun? I don't have room to do this inside at my house right now so I need to know what tools to take to a friends house.

Yes, the hardware is metric to mount to the factory holes. I think the socket needed is something like 13mm or 14mm, but I'm not sure.
I don't have the factory boards, I've got the Rampage boards, but they mount the same way. It's easy. If I recall, you need to remove the metric bolts that are plugging the holes now. Look underneath the truck and you'll see them.
Then simply mount the brackets and boards per the instructions. It's much much easier if you have a helper. I put mine on by myself and it took much longer to do.
As to tools needed, you only need some metric sockets and a metric box end wrench.

out of my 2000 Tundra cut to fit!
I don't know what size socket it takes but the bolts are supposed to be there already Look undet the body below the doors there are 3 sets of 2 bolts that is where they mount

I bought the stainless and put them on myself. Metric socket set and a wrench or two is all you need. They bolt right on to the truck. Like someone said before I did mine. It took me an hour to put them on. That is because I took a 30 minute break halfway through the job to drink a beer. Its extremely easy.

I love the look of the factory brushed stainless step boards ...nice & wide & beefy just like the truck ...but I want polished stainless or chrome so that it matches the trim (door handles / Tundra & Limited decals / and trim around my grill). From the peolple I've talked to it's not ideal to chrome stainless steel ...do you think that an auto body shop would be able to polish those boards so that it would look like chrome or polished SS? Any other options out there that I'm not thinking of?
Hey Guys, this is a great investment. I got t-boned yesterday by a person driving a Toyota Celica running a red light. Long story short, He bent my rear BBS 20 inch Rim, Damaged a little bit of my body and took the running board right off leaving the brackets all mangled.
HOWEVER< you should see his Celica. I drove away to get it home and it will be owed on Monday because the rim cracked. I think he had to have his car towed from the scene.
this is a GREAT investment, primarily, in my EXPERIENCED opinion, for Safety.

I would assume you could get them polished by a professional, but I would imagine the cost would be astronomical! I would check out Iron Cross, Rampage, or Luverne, they all offer oval boards in polished stainless steel. I bought the Rampage and am happy with them so far. They mount to the body without drilling and are rock solid!
I just bought a set from hunter. I got the ones with the rubber inlay for appearance and safety when wet. I went to a couple of stores before I could get some locktight to coat the bolts for ease of future removal. The bolts on mine fit a 12mm socket. I guess that would be the same on all Tundras 2nd gen
