If your interested in beefing up the 3.4, you can go to the 4runner and the Tacoma sites. They have been toying with this engine for years and have lots of info including the air intake deckplate mod., oil and oil filter discussion, all sorts of s/c info, header and exhaust mods and hours worth of other reading on the v6.
You can do a google search and find many of the sites. I think you will come away with the feeling that our engines are quite reliable and somewhat indestructible (ex., adding a s/c @ 95,000 mi. seems not that uncommom).
Like 2toytrucks, I like the v6 stock sound but you can hear numerous sound clips from above sites with loads of exhaust configurations.
I've had mine since Dec. w/ about 6500mi so far and nary a hiccup. I'm averaging about 18.1 MPG, practically all city.

2toytrucks,
What did you modify to get 21 mpg. Was it the air filter/ exhaust mods I've seen people talk about. IF so what were the parts you use?? I'm all for the gas savings and extra ponies and the same time.

Thanks for the tips! I didn't know it was the same V6, but that makes sense since the V6 Super Charger has been around for awhile! (I hope I get mine before 95K mi though!)

Also - I have an '01 V6 auto and get a consistent 18 mpg - I drive like a madman too!

Check out my site below for other mods and specs - good luck and have fun with your new ride!

Jeff

Default mpg

Wish I got that kind of mpg. I live in Arkansas at the foothills of the ozarks. Lots of up and down's in the terrain. I average about 12 to 14 miles per gallon, and that is with nothing in the bed. (4,140 lbs with the tool box) Should have got the v8. The sticker for the mpg's on the v8 were considerably higher than the v6. Too heavy of a truck for a small engine. When I bought the truck it had 6,000 miles on it from the dealership delivery boy and their is no telling what he has done to the truck in the early days. But in a odd sort of way, I still love the truck. lol.

Shawn2 how do you get that poor of milage? I don't think if I tried to beat everyone off the line, tried to redline it at every onramp I could do that bad. I have over 45K on my Tundra and with the Snugtop Highliner shell on the whole time I have averaged over 20mpg for the whole time. Now that includes a lot of dirt roads, 4x4, snow, and lots of stuff in the camper. I don't get a chance to go much over 65-70 and try to keep it at 2500 rpm's on the freeway, thats right around 70. I don't think that the V-6 with the stick is at all underpowered. I will admit I got the truck to haul stuff not haul butt, but it will move when asked.
