Default PistolPete's Ultimate Fly Fishing Rod Transporter!

Attached is a pdf file explaining how to construct this ultimate fly fishing rod transporter that is adaptable to any fishing rod and provides secure, lockable storage and safe transportation of your rods while "puddle jumping" without having to break down the rods each time. It is also MUCH MUCH cheaper than the $169-$189 Sporttube Double Haul models being sold commercially.

more pics are in my photo gallery albums

YOU ARE THE MAN! I have an 06 D/C 4x4 ( same color as yours) and have been searching for a storage solution for my fly rods for a few weeks now. Your design will work perfectly. I don't have a rack on the bed to mount it to but I am going to design something to utilize two of the stake holders on one side or the other to allow the rod holder to clear the roofline. I'm going to build the rod holder soon, THANKS to you, as the TROUT opener is only 4 weeks away!

Thanks for your post and the PDF.

no problem...glad to be of help to fellow fisherman....yeah you could design a rudimentary "field goal support" on the back stake pockets and then a strut across the roof using the "rain gutters" to support the tubes....be interested to see what you come up with....or you could just make a "ladder rack" out of 2x4's and put the front crossbar vertical so you could drill holes thru it to hold the tubes....the back crossmember would lay flat so as to put the bolts thru the 2x4 and the box.
I'm gonna post a very simple mod later tonight that my friends and I have deemed useful for our purposes...

heres to beautiful streams, isolated fun with friends, and TIGHT WET LINES!!!

being that you are in one of the richest towns in CA.... median household income >$120,000 (yorba linda- home of former President Richard Nixon) why not just purchase the Sporttube double hauler....its only $168...I was trying to save money...

I'm not swimming in cash either, so I do like to save money wherever possible. I built a rudimentary rack for the rod holder out of some square tube steel that I had laying around and road tested it..... Lets just say that the aerodynamics proved lacking with the rod holder installed...(read) It was trying to fly off the truck @ 75mph. My original goal was to provide secure storage for my rods outside the cab, so I had to modify the original design a bit. I ended up cutting down the pvc pipes to around 5' and just placed the rod holder in the bed secured with pad-locks and high strength steel cable. I also doubled the rod carrying capacity to 4 rods by adding 2 more tubes to the original box. Now that it's done i've found that I can still offroad on some very nasty trails without fear of a rod holder bouncing off the roof of the cab or becoming tangled in low hanging branches

well while I was at it I devised a way to safely store our spin casting rods in the bed up and out of the way of crushing luggage. I've attached a few pics and more can be found in my photo gallery....again this mod was done to minimize permanent alteration of the truck....thus drilling the bed was avoided..I'm currently devising a more discrete clamp utilizing a similar clamp as the ones that hold the RETRAX to the bed rail....but this has been on two fishing trips and has worked wonders!!!
