    Default Remote Start Question

My Tundra has keyless entry but no factory alarm system. It would be really cool, literally since I live in Central Texas, to be able to cool the truck down before I get into it. I'm not keen on springing for an alarm system with remote start, mainly because everyone ignores them when they go off anyway. I'm wanting to know if adding just a remote start would necessitate carrying another clicker or could the keyless entry system be integrated on the existing clicker or on the one for the remote start. I'm just trying to get out of carrying a wad of "stuff" in my pocket all the time..

I bet your truck does have a factory alarm. Do you have the little truck flash when you lock your truck( I believe it in in the clock) If you do, and you have keyless entry, which you said you do then your truck has an alarm that just needs to be activated. I had mine done at the dealer a few weeks after I got it and read about it on here.

My dealer installed an AutoStart on my truck when I bought it, they tied everything into the AS key fob, so I only need the one remote.

Check this link out: Alarm activation confirmed!

Igot an email back from my salesman today. he said remote start is available from the dealership for $550. Hell, for that much, I can have a decent alarm with RS installed at one of the custom places here. Maybe I'll just live without it. I was also kinking around the idea of a stereo(Kenwood) with Bluetooth and Ipod interface. Not sure ifI even want to go that way right now. maybe I'll just drive it as is and think about it for a while.. I need to stop spending money anyway. So far, it's been an ARE bed cap, Westin oval step rails, and window tint. At least it's looking good..

Oh, and a Rostra backup camera.. That one is really slick..

I just wish they had put some decent rims on it..

You should be able to have a really nice 2 way remote starter installed in your truck for around $300. Forget the factory stuff. It is crap. I have a viper in mine. I really like it. I am sure some other members can chime in as to some other good brands but any good remote can tie into your existing system so all you need is one remote on your key chain. It will lock/unlock, start/stop the truck and sometimes add in some other options for not much extra cash if you want it. It was money well spent in my opinion.

For you guys who have RS, does the truck keep running when you get in it or does it have to be restarted?

My AutoStart keeps running when I get in my truck, the Toyota RS cuts out when you unlock/open the door, or so I have been told, and you have to restart the truck once you get in. I was also told that the range on the factory RS is terrible, my dealer does not even recommend them.

My RS stays on in my truck even after remotely unlocking the doors. Just have to insert key, turn to on, tap brake and you're good to go. But if you get into truck, without inserting the key and switching to on, the truck will turn off. I'm guessing it's a safety feature.

Sorry, mistake in last post "But if you get into truck, without inserting the key and switching to on, IF YOU TAP ON THE BRAKES the truck will shut off". Sorry for confusion.

I have the factory installed RS. It has decent range also; I park my truck six parking spaces from my apartment and have no issues with the range. Only drawback to the system is that you no longer have the chirp when you lock or unlock the doors using the keyless remote that comes with the RS.

    Bob,

Here's a little bit more information on the RS i have. I purchased the truck from a dealer in Mass. and the RS that they installed is from Code Alarm and the model is CA 5050. On the remote itself it says CATX-50, but the manual it came with is for a CA 5050. On their website you can look up their manual and features if you're interested. Also I checked Toyota's website and it says that it cost $529 to install, so this is wouldn't be a cheap option to install from the factory.

what about the compustar one button! It does lock/unlock and remote start. The remote is fairly small, probably half the size of the factory one. If you use the blade AL, which is dockable for a clean install can retain all factory functions. It also does the factory beep, which most people like! Range is better than factory.

From what I have heard of, most aftermarket starters keep running when you open the door. Like radian and solid said, only when you tap the brake pedal will the vehicle shut off if the key is not in the ignition in run position. Probably a safety feature to ensure no one steals the car while it's running. Another nice feature on some is you can keep it running after you are driving around. I hit the start button on mine once I have the truck in park, remove the key and it stays running. That is a nice feature in the winter time. Especially if you're from the rock. Aint that right Radianguy??

I just had the dealer installed remote start and alarm activated. The range on the remote start sucks. It also turns off when you open the door. So since the range sucks....you turn it on when walking to it and bam it turns off when you open the door. Really stupid. Had I never had one before I wouldn't know better. I had a factory installed one on my expedition. Completely different. Range was amazing and did not turn off when opening the door.

Does anyone know how to disable the cut off when opening the door on the factory RS? I wished I had seen this thread prior to wasting my money on the dealer option. Just thought the dealer option would be the premium.

The dealer is not the way to go with literally any option. Mine wanted $550 for the RS installed. I wouldn't have paid that even if it did not have the door cut-off issue, considering you can get a top quality Viper or Python alarm/RS installed for that. I have never understood why dealers were always over the top on stuff they sell, but they all are. I guess they don't recognize third parties as being competitive. Even if they give you the big 10% discount, that just barely covers the tax.. Once I put the key in the ignition and drive it off the lot, that's the last they see from me unless they are doing cheap oil changes or something similar.
