Default Tundra DC Parts Compatibility

I am not sure where to start this thread, so I will start it here and the moderator can move it if this is not the appropriate place....

I have barely owned my Tundra Double Cab one month, and am already chomping at the bit to start buying all of the hot aftermarket add-ons, mods, and accessories. What is holding me back is concern about what will fit and what will not.

I have assiduously read this forum for the last month learning about what's hot, what's not, and why this is better than that. I have learned a lot (thank-you fellow tundra-nites!), but most of the discussion has been about 2003 models and older, and very little has been directed specifically to the Tundra DC. Given that the Tundra DC has inherited much from the Sequoia, and given that its geometry may differ somewhat from other models, I am not sure how much of what I have learned is applicable to my truck.

I have been looking for a tonneau cover and some of the manufactures I have contacted earlier this month were still waiting for beds to arrive from Toyota so they could design a new version, and have yet to assign a new part number. Most of the websites I have visited have not been updated to include the 2004 model year, and many are not up to date for 2003. Today I was visiting the Bassani website looking for information on their cat-back system. In this case they do list the 2004 models, but they include a specific exception for the DC -- just what I was afraid of. I guess what I am experiencing is the joy of being on the cutting (or bleeding) edge of a new model.

It seems to me it would be helpful to keep a running list of aftermarket products that are known to fit the Tundra DC as people begin buying and trying them. The purpose would not be to judge their effectiveness, but rather to just indicate whether they fit and are compatible with this model, and if so, maybe list their part number. If you agree, I am willing to inaugurate this list by making the unfortunate observation that Kevin's sexy fuse cover does not fit the Tundra DC. I am particularly sad about this because it was a very fine piece of workmanship, and looked even better in my hands than it did on his website. On the other hand, the throttle body cover fits, and looks even better.

As I and others begin to contemplate buying big ticket items for this fine truck, it would be useful having such a list to help guide us, particularly for those items that require tearing half of our truck apart before we know whether or not they will fit. All I am suggesting is that when someone takes that leap of faith and buys an aftermarket item for their DC, and it fits, just add a post to this thread saying....

"I installed Acme Mfg's Dempsey Widgit (Model 12-002A) on my Tundra DC and it fits ok."
What do you think?

Yes.....It is the price you pay for purchasing a new model. I am just emailing any mfg who does not have DC specifics to send me info on compatibility. I am sure it will be months before they all get their act together.

Many friends of mine who are into "modding" their cars or trucks always call every single aftermarket company and make their cars/trucks available to them for prototyping.
My buddy George was one of the first people to own a WRX. He had made so many phone calls he didnt see his car for almost a year. But when it came back to him. He had it fully modded and for free.
Intakes, headers, downpipes, exhaust kits, brake kits, body kits, carbon fiber this and that. He really played it smart, and thats exactly what I would do if I owned a new DC.

Default DC "mod"

Ordered an A.R.E. hard tonneau cover from Shell Country in Irvine CA on 1/1/04, should be receiving in the next week or so. The great salesman at Shell Counntry (Roni) called every manufacturer and asked personally while I was standing there what their plans were for the DC. Only ARE and Snugtop have produced a lid, the others are still in production and varied from February to mid-year for release.

Hope my info is correct, or I'll be mighty embarrassed!

Thanks for the info. I had decided on a soft Access cover and have been waiting for them to release a part number, but maybe I should reconsider and get the ARE hard cover. I think they look better anyway. Let us know how it works out.

Clydemfb posted on another thread today that he got the TRD S/C, headers and catback system installed. I knew a S/C was available for the DC, but I didn't think the headers and catback system would fit the DC. He didn't indicate whether any customization was required.

surfwagon56, do you have to remove the rail caps to install the ARE cover, or does the cover fit over the rail caps?

surfwagon, you are correct about the ARE lid being produced. Is your truck black or the maroon one pictured? If it is black I may have seen your lid on Friday at the factory. The caps will be out soon, they have the prototypes and have started to refine them. They were on me truck last friday. The ARE lids and caps will fit over the factory rail caps. On January 30, I will have either a cap or lid installed. I will post pictures then.

pacjr is correct, the rail caps do not have to be removed. I have not seen the actual cap as this will be the first one the local reseller has installed, but I liked the contours of the top on the Taco they had on the lot, and the salesman said it would be very similar in appearance. Also, ARE has a coupon right now for a free keyless lock w/ purchase of the lid. From what I understand, it ties into your keyless remote and locks and unlocks the lid with your factory keyfob. We'll see if it actually works or not, pretty cool if it does!

By the way, my truck is Salsa Red, not black, although I thought about getting a contrasting color for a custom look.

Default Bugshield

I didn't care out them one way or the other until I got my DC and it did not have a shield. My last Tundra had one, and now I can see they work quite well.

I've been trying to find an after market shield and I ran across one at ExpressAutoParts.com. I select the '04 DC and it's showing this:

INTCPT SMK SEQUOIA 01

What do you'all think?

Since I started this thread, I guess the least I can do is update it once in a while with known, good part numbers, so here goes....
Covercraft Custom Fit Truck Cover (Weathershield HD) -- P/N C16498HG
Access Roll-Up tonneau cover, Limited Edition -- P/N ACL5161TTDC
BedRug Bed liner -- P/N BRY04DCK
All of these part numbers are for the Tundra Double-Cab.

Until I get my new house built, I have to keep my truck outside and there is a lot of tree sap, not to mention acid rain and everything else. So, I bought a car cover to keep it protected. I got the Covercraft Weathershield HD which has the best rating for almost all categories (several different fabrics are available, some in different colors), it is a great cover, and it fits well. However, it is BIG!!!! It is like putting one of those termite fumigation covers on your house. This is really going to test my dedication to keeping my truck protected.

The Access Roll-Up Cover is great for those that prefer a soft tonneau cover. It is easy to install, fits great, and looks even better. I got the Limited Edition (black anodized cross members plus a couple other bells and whistles). The part number for the regular edition is AC5161TTDC.

I got the part number for the BedRug directly from Wise Industries. However, the last time I checked with them the DC version is not yet out of engineering. They told me it will be available in April. I got a sample of the material and it looks like it will be real easy on the knees if you have to crawl around in the bed of your truck a lot -- probably would be moderately comfortable to sleep on too.

Now onto the fun stuff -- suspension, engine, exhaust, etc. I will post part numbers as my wallet continues to hemorrhage.

Did you get a soft or hard cover for your bed? I'd appreciate any advice you can share.

I got the Access Limited soft cover and I really like it. It was easy to install, very good quality, looks great, and the latch mechanism keeps the fabric very taut. If you need to haul something big that extends above the top of the bed, you simply roll the tonneau cover up, and there are a couple of straps that keep it neatly stowed at the front of the bed.

I really like the looks of the color matched hard covers like the A.R.E. LSII. However, they are rather permanent in the sense that if you unexpectedly find yourself somewhere and need to haul something large that won't fit under the cover, it will not be easy to remove it. The A.R.E. dealer said it was inadvisable to drive with the cover lifted, even if it is tied down. Due to the amount of wind resistence, a lot of stress can be put on the cover itself and the mounting points. Also, it is quite heavy (120 lb.), so you would most likely need someone to help you remove it. I was hoping the cover had a quick disconnect hinge on the front, but I don't belive it does.

The other down side of the hard covers is that they are about twice as expensive -- e.g., 850-900 vs. 450 (for the Access Limited). If you can live with the limitations of hauling large objects, then get a hard cover; otherwise, get a soft cover.

One other thing I should mention is that the soft covers are not completely water proof. For example, I went through a brushless car wash where the high-pressure rinse was nearly horizontal at the back of the bed. I checked the inside of the bed afterwards and there was a tiny amount of spray that penetrated through the seam between the tonneau cover and the top of the tailgate, but just a fine mist settled on the last foot of the bed floor. The rest of the bed was completely dry. I would say that under normal rain conditions where the rainfall is mostly vertical, there would probably be little or no penetration.

The Bedrug for the Tundra Double Cab is now available. This was supposed to start shipping in mid April, but because Toyota was interested in reselling this, Wise Industries waited to release to general public until Toyota had a chance to inspect it and weigh in on fit and quality. I guess the manufacturer didn't want to release the product in case it needed to make changes to satisfy Toyota. Anyhow, it is now available and fits like a glove. I am very happy with it.

Part Number is BRY04DCK

Default SS Autochrome

The SS Autochrome (shorty) headers fit the '04 DC V8 (at least the passenger side, haven't got the drivers side on yet, but that's another story). Looks like the Y pipe will fit as well, but there is the 02 sensor on the Y pipe that would need to be dealt with.

TRD cat-back exhaust fits the DC as well.
