Default Need Mod Advice

Hi,

Sorry, I'm not good at searching the archives, the answers I need are probably there. If anyone can answer, or direct me to answers I would appreciate it....

I am considering buying a used Tundra and have some questions about potential mods I would like to make if I buy one.

#1 Is there an E-Locker available for the tundra like the tacoma? If so, did it ever come equiped with one from the factory? How much does it cost to add? If no e-locker, what is the preferred locking choice for a tundra?

#2 I am not very familar with IFS....Do any of the moderate lift options improve wheel travel? What is the best lift in the 3-4" range and how much?

#3 Are there any relatively simple mods well proven to give more power and gas milage (ie High flow intake, exhaust, or ???)

Thanks for any advice.

-brewmaster

P.S. If you know anyone who wants to buy a Jeep Comanchee take a look at www.geocities.com/brewmasterjt $3500

#1. No, there is no e-locker avalible, from the factory or otherwise. ARB and Powertrax make lockers that will fit the Tundra.

#2. I'm not sure.

#3. Exhaust is a pretty simple mod. There are mixed results w/ different intakes. You can get a supercharger, but that will set you back around $4000.

1. ARB makes some very nice lockers for the tundra that are manually operated by a switch, like an e-locker would be. However, the ARBs are pneumatic, which means you need to get an air compressor too. Which, personally, I would like to have anyways as you can use it to fill up tires, etc.. The compressor usually goes for about $150 or so, the lockers are about $650 per differential. Total package then would be about $1450 plus installation.

I'm pretty sure the powertrax is an "automatic" locker, which in my opinion would be somewhat annoying for normal road use. But, a lot of people really like them and they do get the job done as well.

2. With IFS, wheel travel is gonna be somewhat lame (at least compared to a tricked out jeep) regardless. Different shocks (longer ranchos for instance) will provide some help. There have been mixed reviews on lift kits out there, not sure which one I would go with.

3. Exhaust seem to help. People here really like the Borlas. There has also been a ton of talk about KN FIPK 2, however it has very mixed reviews. The only thing people seem to agree about on it is that it makes the truck sound cooler. Some people have said there is a noticable difference in power above 2500 rpm, however just about as many said no noticeable power change. Might want to look into new headers, although your talking about some serious money for nominal increases. New exhaust and new headers might net 10hp realistically for well over $1k. If you want a real power increase, your probably going to be stuck getting the supercharger.

#2. There really isn't a lift available that provides a 3" or 4" for a 4WD other than a 3" body lift. Without major work you can add spacers to your stock coilovers for about $250 or for about $700-$800 you can get adjustable coilovers. Either set-up will give you a max of 2.5"(without any problems). Tuff County has a 4.5" lift that drops the front differential and uses spacers in the IFS for about $1200. Camburg has a set-up that is strictlly a 6" suspension lift. New upper and lower a-arms, drive axles, adjustable coilovers. This set-up widens the front 3" on each side. Also, they highly recommend(or require) new front fenders. Cost is $4000.00 Installed or $3280 Parts.
