hallmark MFG. makes 2 different campers for both the Generation 1 and Generation 2 Toyota Tundra. We use either supersprings and or air bags to increase the payload capaicty and return the camber and caster back to normal for optimal handling. We also install happi jac or torklift tie downs to secure the camper to the truck. Load range "D" (8ply) or "E" (10ply) tires are recommended as well. hallmark Mfg. Inc.- The only option for hallmark pop-up truck campers. Authorized dealer of Okanagan hardside campers. : Home
Why am I getting a hard time on Tundra Solutions for putting a 1600 1b (dry weight) Hallmark on my 2007 4x4 5.7 TRD Tundra. I misspoke and said I had a Northstar when it is actually an 03 Hallmark (slight confusion). You say that it is OK to put a Ute, Milner or a Guanella on this truck yet people are advising me not to.
Thanks
Cathy
Well, the max payload for your Tundra is 1580lbs. Two average sized people, luggage and a full load of fuel will probably take up at least 500lbs, leaving less than 1100lbs for your 1600lb camper and gear. Adding some airbags in the rear suspension might help, but you're still "over the limit", so to speak.
The Tundra much more capable of towing heavy loads than hauling them in the bed.

i have a 4.7 CM and i wouldnt be worried about putting in 1600 lbs if i had air bags. Just ensure you have good tires that can handle the load and they are aired up right.
Obviously its not within the payload limit and not safe but its your call. Id do it.

Had been watching this thread with interest and finally last weekend got our rig out for the first trip - we have an 07 4 x 4 with 5.7 and we just got an 8 foot Okanagan which the tag says is 779 kg wet (1700 lbs.) Prior to leaving, I had installed Firestone airbags and made my tie downs front and back based on Torklift T2305 and T3304 (they call me frugal, James Frugal...) So, basing this on our previous rig (92 chev longbox extended with import 7 foot camper 1289# and airbags), the new setup rode like a dream over wobbly forestry roads and steep hills. Way more stable, more than enough power (I was almost aroused how it performed going up hills) and did I say stable? Yes I know someone is going to dig out their calculator and state that I am over weight by x number of kg but based on how this performs - I know there is not going to be any problems. If she snaps in half - oh well - the main point is that we are out there camping and a crappy day of fishing far out ranks a good day of calculating GVWR's...
If someone lets me know how to post pics, I'll stick a few up.

I need a new word of the month people!
Well, of course the most fun thing would be my wife (I never know when she might be scanning posts) and following that, beer in our large fridge. This thing (camper) is an 05 from an old timer that couldn't camp anymore - he had used it 3 times - has the biffy which is the natural progression from peeing off the tailgate, no hot water but all the other basic stuff. The truck is pretty stock at this point other than the airbags now. Love it. Normally weren't going to do the plunge for truck and camper this soon and together but when opportunities arise...thats why they invented lines of credit on your house. Have to figure out how to haul a zodiac, the dog loves the space in the backseat - my only concern that the weak link will be the stock 18" Michelins on forestry roads - any suggestions?
Had a peek at your album and truck - pretty sweet! That would look good under a camper. Have done the canopy sleeping thing - it works too. Nice guns but they don't like us Canadians playing with them. Bad...

I purchased the Tundra only after I was convinced it could carry a lance 815 truck camper on the bed, which has a dry weight of 1,800 lbs. It does with a few modifications, which include swapping out the tires, and spring helpers. I got the 5.7 V8 SR7 with a TRD package with gave me the stiffer shocks & beefer coils, and the SR5 gave me the aux tranny cooler, and more importantly the bigger 10.5 inch differiential.
Leaf Spring Helpers -
I was sold on supersprings until I went to the largest truck camper dealer here on the east coast who told me he had this month removed four sets of supersprings on tundras because of bottoming out issues when carrying a camper. He offered to sell me a used set cheap. He recommended firestone air bags. Or said I could try a new product called roadmaster which is like superspring in that it attaches to the springs to add support. He just started installing a them on some tundras, and could not vouch how they would do with the heavy camper.
I never thought I'd go with air bags - it will be a pain to carry an air compressor, inflate just so for the load using a pressure gauge, and then deflate. Spring helpers are far easier. Oh well, at least with the air bags I am assured it will not stiffen the ride without a load. (Despite what supersprings says that system does tighten up (stiffen) the leaf springs, if only a little.
The next install item is torkforce tie downs. Happijacks were ruled out after discovering they can and have distorted (ie, bent) the metal walls of the tundra truck beds. Torkforce attaches to the frame.
Finally, the OEM tires were swapped out. The OEMs have a load rating of about 2,400 lbs, whereas light truck tires have a rating of 3,000 and up.
Oh yeah, before I purchased the 08 tundra, I had done similiar mods to my 97 v6 sr5 tacoma and camped for over 10 years toting a truck camper with a dry weight of 1,400 lbs over thousands of miles. I took it both on and off road and never had one issue arise in the more than 100K I put on the truck which I just traded up for the tundra. Of course, I had to replace my shocks more than usual because of beating they take with a camper, but that's to be expected.
