Add me to the list. Mine is the 6 disk cd version, but not jbl.
I picked up my new Tundra a week ago and within an hour of driving it off the lot, the volume stopped working. Mine seems to be intermittent, but happens at least once a day. Mine seems to only occur after I start using CD's and seems to only be during heat of the day. But only had it a week so cant say for sure if there is a true "when" but can definitly say something "aint right".
I took it into the dealer closest to my house yesterday (Stone Mtn Toyota) and was told by the person checking me in that they have replaced several of these already and they would just order me a new one. Then suddenly the service manager appears and asks if I can wait for 2 1/2 hours as they try to recreate. I told him it was intermittant and seems to happen more when it is hot out (it was early morning and coolish) so he would may not be able to recreate in that moment, and I was confused why, if it is a known issue, they cant just order the dang replacement. He said if they cant recreate, they can't replace. So what, I am supposed to wait until it happens and then rush over to them? I told him he was crazy and I would take it to a different dealer. Needless to say I was a little po'd. Like I am going to make this up to get a new radio after 1 week - dohhhh.
Went home and called the salesperson who sold me my new baby (Sandy Springs Toyota) and he said he would talk to his manager and just order the dang thing and will call me Monday and let me know when it should be in. He even offered to come pick up my truck from my work and take it to get replacement installed for me when its in. Needless to say, if I have any other issues I will deal with the traffic of 285 to take it to Sandy Springs rather then the 1 mile drive to Stn Mtn dealership. (those of you in atanta know what I am talking about with the traffic on 285 LOL).
I was going to get a wood dash kit installed but will now wait until radio issue is resolved and time to wait and see that replacement doesnt have same issue before I move forward on dash kit.
At this point I may even consider an after mkt radio. This one sounds like crap - the bass is overwhelming and shakes my windows when set at 0 - so I have to dial bass down to at least -3. Pretty sad for a 33k vehicle. Oh well, I still love my truck - just wish I didnt have to deal with issues so early on.

My radio just started doing the same thing. Did everbody get there radio replaced and how long did it take?
I'm having my radio looked at as well as a rattling passenger seat belt looked at tomorrow. I'll post what the decide to do. I noticed that along with the volume knob problem, I get display errors on the screen like "8888888" or just a "á" displayed on the screen.

Just got back from the dealership. Had to purchase a rear d/s bumper support thanks to the wife. Anyways, I talked with the customer relations manager and basically said, "Supposedly, there are a lot of people with this problem. The volume knob will quit working intermittently usually on somewhat longer trips. Also, on occasion, when this happens, I get a "â" or "á" on the display screen and the whole radio will freeze up." They looked for a TSB and they called Toshiba (?), whomever makes the regular single CD HU for the Tundra. They said they want to look at it ASAP. My advice is take it into the dealership and talk to whomever you have to and get it replaced. My new radio should be here Thursday.

They were supposed to order my replacement last week with 2 days for it to come in. Someone messed up and forgot to order it, so they told me Friday that they would order it with 3 days for it to come in. So hopefully will have it this week.

Just got my radio replaced. Took about a week to come in and went in without an appointment.
Sounds good, works fine, and the knobs feel a little stronger.
Heading in this week for the same radio problem as well as the clock that loses time in the heat and the sunken dash. At least the dash will only have to be removed once.
mines been doing this for awhile now and it always seems to do it when I first get in the truck after I get off work. I work second shift so the heat is not the problem. Then last night my wife and I were going out to eat in it and she went to turn it up when a song came on and the whole thing just powered off, and would not turn back on. Im gonna call my dealership in the morning and see if they will go ahead and order me a new one so I can get it done when I get my oil changed next monday since its a 37 mile one way trip to the dealership.
Our truck did this when it was new. I read this thread back then. I got mad and thumped the knob hard with my finger to turn the radio on and off. After I did that the third time the thing has worked flawlessly. Just needed some Master Sergeant brogan counceling. What do you have to lose. Thump it good with your finger a couple of times to turn it on and off and see if it continues to work. Ours does. But then again our radio knob isn't as fast as a 5.7L Tundra. You may have to use a sledge hammer if you have the 5.7L.

For those with radio issues, before warned your only getting another POS to replace your POS
Toyota will play the odds(which are against you) one or two radios in 36k wont break their bank.
Get the stocker replaced and then promptly go aftermarket for a reliable unit it will give you something to shove in the hole when its time to trade or sell.

i"m having the same problem with my 2008 tundra radio . Have not had a chance to take it back to the dealer . volume control stops working also radio will turn on and off.
I have a limited crewmax with the 6-disc JBL system. Today when I got off from work the stereo controls on the dash and the lcd screen didn't work for the ride home, but I was able to control it via the steering wheel controls. I got home, turned the engine off/on a few times, played with the dash controls and it still didnt work. About an hour later I needed to go to the store and this time the controls work.
Has anyone recently experienced something similar? If I go to the dealer and ask for a replacement unit will they replace it without being able to reproduce the problem?
I know the best thing is to go aftermarket but I don't want to upgrade my system as of yet.

A competent technician can replace your radio in 15 minutes. But the dealership needs a little more time because of their logistics. I say no more than an hour, or they're not taking care of you.
I am unfortunately adding myself to this list. My 2008 SR5 with 6 disc CD player started doing the "volume knob not working" and "backlight flickering out" and now "display freezing" crap. It started a couple weeks after I got it and is now getting worse. Fortunately my controls still work other than when the volume locks but I'm now taking it back in asap!
