Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Eclispe AVN6610 Versus Kenwood DNX7100 ?", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Can anyone help me decide?
Which do you think would be best in my 2003 Tundra?
Has anyone seen both operate?
I can get the Kenwood for 989.00
The Eclispe for 1275.00
Thanks for your help

Car audio magazine had a review on double din nav units. They rated the Kenwood the best. They like it because its an all in one HDD unit at a reasonable price. It got dinged for having sub par graphics. What I don't like about it is that it has 2v outputs. The 6610 is a dvd based nav and has 2 slots. One for the nav disc and the other for cd or movie dvd. It has 5 v outputs which rocks. One the nav side the 6610 has 8.5 million points of interest(POI's) and the 7100 has 6 million. Between these two, I'd lean towards the eclipse since I would be adding external amplifiers. I am currently shopping for a double din nav unit and am leaning towards the Alpine IVA-W205. It has a removable portable nav unit. This unit only has 2v outs but you can hook up an external processor which would bump it up to 4v.

The Z1/Z2 has 11 million POI with Hdd plus advanced Music search based on voice commands and the sound quality is pretty good. I Helped a Ts member with his Crewmax on adding the Z1 and it came out pretty good If you want features Pioneer is the one the go with Kenwood is decent and the I pod im told is much better on the lay out's.Yes they all have there pro's and con's but I know this Pioneer is much better vs the Lame Toyota navi unit's which are Low budgeted rated based on feature's.
I agree with tundrav8georgia. The Z2 is a bad mofo. And it actually has 12 million POI's. It has way more features than the Kenwood but it is pricey. Still only 2v outs.
Pioneer and Kenwood have always been gimmicky and offer a lot for the money, but Alpine and Eclipse have always been far superior in the sq department.... Out of those two I'd go Eclipse.... Hands down....
Either you want features or you want a better sounding head unit...
The only head unit that Pioneer makes that rocks is the Premier DEXP9 .. Burr Brown DACs...

That may have been the case 6 year's ago but Alpine and Eclipse dont have the Best rated system anymore.I also look at CES electronics show In Vegas Pioneer received best in show for 2006 on the Z1/Z2.Yes Opinions are going to vary But for those of us who have the system I think it's very refinded and worth paying for.Case you want to know Pioneer and Eclipser are Oem Vendor's for Toyota audio system's..

What you speak is of no new news. Up until last year I could take out an Avic head unit and replace it with an Alpine or Eclipse and instantly have better sq. I say up until last year because I recently left the high end 12 a/v business.. A business in which I spent over half my life in CES is only fun because the Porn convention is run at the same time.. don't ask me how I know...
I did not say that it wasn't a good head unit with a ton of good features. What I said was the Eclipse head unit is a much better SOUNDING head unit. To me sq is much more important than NAV. But hey, to each his own. Portable Magellan has never let me down, but my new truck will get Alpine's NVEN872A...

sound quality on the Pioneer I find equally as good if not better vs the Toyota Eclipse brand. Pioneer with mosfet built in Amp is pretty good .
Megellan also makes better Navi Map's then Pioneer tel atlas Brand too I've been told that from many Ts member's but I havent run into any issues with Pioneer either.

It should sound better than a stock Toyota Fujitsu stereo... I'm not comparing it to a stock Fujitsu stereo. They are not the same as any other Eclipse deck. Just like the Alpine decks made for BMW do not sound as good as a high end Alpine after market deck...

I don't know about you, but I don't think I have time to check out 12 million POI's

Eclipse decks are Fujitsu stereo's since it's the same parent company with slight revision. The overall issues with Toyota OEM are feature wise they either cut you short on option or don't offer the support aftermarkets do. Hdd is much more superior based on design because you can burn Cd's into your music library and pretty much retrieve this based off voice command's with Toyota you get outdated DVD technology with slower drives.
I've had Both Toyota navi and let me tell based Off my experience on having them Toyota can do much better and Eclipse wasn't much better
alpine If i recall Makes the Honda Factory navi and that is good system if's it anything like my dad's 2 door accord that system is top Notch they also have xm traff navi and the zagat rating system on eating out and dinning which is helpful on areas you don't know much about. You asked about 12 million on Poi well date is everything and since Toyota unit's are lower on number's your gaining DVD lower numbers vs Hdd another Key benefit on Hdd is storage.Yea I've researched this topic extensively and you might want to ask those members who took my advice there opinion's on the (2) crewmax's with Z1 and M3 there are a lot of on Board who feel Toyota doesnt step to the plate on refinement and you have to ask yourself why?

Between those two get the Eclipse. Much better unit and easier install while retaining all the factory harnesses, steering wheel controls included.
Another to option to confuse the situation would be the D3 since it's substantially less than a grand and offers some sweet features which makes it about the best bang for the buck on the market.
Personally, for my money, it's Eclipse all the way. They make a superior product at a lower price than the competition.
