Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Have JBL...upgrade speakers?", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
In all my past vehicles I've always kept the stock headunit and upgraded the stock speakers and had great results. I'm not into making boxes, etc, just like to upgrade the stock speakers in the stock locations.
Has anyone done this with their JBL system? Can you replace the stock subwoofer with something with a little more punch in the stock enclosure?
I'd just like a little input before I start filling my cart at Crutchfield...
Thanks

I wouldn't replace the JBL sub with anything else in that enclosure. Its made specifically for it to fit under the seat. Most aftermarket subs would sound horrible anyways with that little of air volume...Oh wait the factory one sounds weak too lol. As for the speakers...Definitely replace them if you want. Maybe go with some Alpine Type R speakers...They always sound really clean and clear to me.

Anyone know what size the stock sub is or how much power the stock amp sends to the sub? I have not bothered to take mine apart to check yet.
Assuming it's a 8", you can replace it in the stock enclosure, but there are some things I'd do to make it sound better. First, I'd layer the outside of the enclosure with some sort of damping product (dynamat, rammat, etc.) - this will help to counteract some of the cancelation caused by the resonation of the enclosure. The most important thing to make a sub sound good in the stock enclosure is coosing the right sub. There are tons of them out there that will sound awesome in a small sealed enclosure such as the stock one.
The JBL speakers are pretty decent sounding speakers, IMO, of course you can always upgrade to something better. Like most people I was disappointed with the power sub. I went into a car audio store to get an opinion on how to get rid of th loose, boomy, chesty, however you want to describe it sound from the JBL subwoofer. They put in Dynamat all around the power sub and the rear panel. It made a difference, the bass sounds tighter. It looks easy enough that I could have done it myself.
The other option, if I didn't like how they sound, they would put in a shallow depth 8" Pioneer subwoofer in the existing enclosure and a more powerful amp to drive it. I has a mounting depth that will fit the enclosure. But they warned me that the enclosure may not handle the power?
I'm happen with the way the dynamat helped with the sound quality of the bass now, but at high volume on certain tunes I can here the passenger door rattle. Time to dynamat that sucker soon.
I can take pictures and post of what they did if anyone is interested?
I will put my Alpine/JL Audio system into the new Tundra I plan to buy. The system is in my 4Runner currently and rocks. I will put the 10w3 subs in a box to go under the double cab seats.
I'd like to see pics of the sub with the dynamat. Thinking about doing it to mine. Thanks.

I have a 1000 watt 12" Kicker behind my Crewmax seat and plenty of room to spare but you need a good amp also. The JBL doesn't put out enough power to drive a sub that big and give quality response. It's only 8" deep and still leaves me plenty of leg room in the back. I have replaced everything audio including head. Went with Boston Acoustic in the doors and dash tweeters.

So you have a 12" L7?? Your sig says you have a 10". Both are awesome subs though. I had a 12" L7 with a 650rms alpine amp behind my passenger seat in my DC for a while and it slammed.

Took me longer to figure out how to pull out the panels. Once I figured it out it was relatively easy to remove. The rear panels are all secured by plastic clips. The passenger side panels come out first, then the side with the subwoofer.

That's what I was talking about earlier. When I upgrade my stereo, I am going to make a new enclosure out of fiberglass - I love working with that stuff!!

You must have good experience with Dynamat because it works well in this application. I didn't really want to put a new sub enclosure that will eat up the space behind the rear seats. I use the limited space for storage such as boots and jackets when I go skiing and our gun cases when hunting with friends.
I like how it works for my subwoofer that I'm going to do my doors with this material. I've been reading on how to remove the door panels by one of TS member on this forum and it doesn't look too hard at all.
That Dynamat has worked great in my truck. Can't say enough good things about it.

I have plenty with this stuff. I really like any brand of damping in a car, as long as there is some there. I am going to wait to put some in my truck until I actually upgrade the stereo.
Keep in mind that there are many brands and styles of damping material for cars. Do some research and find what you thinnk best fits your application. For instance, I have some light-weight material across the back of the trunk in my mustang. I first put it on when I had my old exhaust system and it helped with the interiior noise a bit. Now that I have no cats and chambered mufflers, I'm sure it does not really matter (my exhaust is freakin' loud on that car - but I love it!). I went with the light-weight stuff for obvious reasons - to keep from slowing me down!

got any pics?
8" mounting depth has got to take away a lot of leg room.
