Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Help with cheap but good rear speaker sound", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have read several posts on stereo upgrades and not sure if I have read all of them to start looking at the options that I have for my 08 double cab tundra.
My stereo (non jbl) rear speaker sound sucks. it is a little better after I replaced the front and rear speakers. I could not belive how cheap those stock speakers are.
when I replaced the front door 6x9's it made a big differance but the rear door 6 1/2's still very quiet sounding thought about trying to replace those with 6x9's to see if it will make a differance.
It's starting to look like the only way to get the sound that I want out of the HU is to add a amp. I would like to add a amp but don't have the money right now. Is there any other options to get louder sound out of the rear speakers besides a amp. also would It help to put 6x9's in the rear doors instead of 6 1/2
Yeah if anything I would think a 6x9 would lose volume since the cone is bigger and take slightly more power to push the air, when using the exact same power to begin with ... I used Alpine 6.5's all around and mine is so loud that you couldnt hear a cannon go off outside when the stereo is blasting, but then again I dont have a stock head unit ... my built in stereo amp is 200 watts total ... save your money and the mess changing the rears to a 6x9, get an amp or a head unit and this worry will go bye-bye in a hurry.

Get some Memphis Power Reference 6.5's for the rear. They are a good sounding speaker with quite a bit of sound output compared to factory (and other aftermarket) speakers.
Welcome to Memphis Car Audio - Go to that site and look at the Power Reference Speakers. Memphis makes a good product at a good price - plus it has a great warranty!
I put alpine 6 1/2 (1000 watt) and they sound pretty good but I really need an amp. Got them off e-bay for $75.00 delivered which was $90 cheaper then best buy. Good luck ,hope this helped. Robert

Dont mess with rear sound. Rear sound in recording studios and concerts is only used for "fill" or ambiance. The rear speakers are not meant to be heard. Listen to any stereo from a car in the world made after 2000 or so, and you will notice that the fronts are louder than the rears. They are supposed to be that way.
Honestly, your best bet for extra volume would have been to skip the speakers and add a small sub. The sub takes the bass load off the door speakers and allows them to play louder with less distortion. Then the whole system seems louder and images better.

Did you have trouble getting the Alpines to fit in the rear doors? Crutchfield's site doesn't show any Alpines that fit the rear doors.
What model were they?
No problems with the alpines in the back or in the front. And do some dynamat work and you set.All my set up is alpine with 2 10" woofers in a custom box and sound great. And if i want real loud i use my son camry 2008 that we build for competitions and hit good db's.

Ditto what someone else said. Do the research, go to different sites, look for posts from people who seem to know what they're talking about and who have taken a very scientific and methodical approach to getting the best possible sound out of their audio systems. Most of them will have something in common: They're driving around without any rear speakers in their cars. Due to the shape of your ears and the path sound travels, you get the most full effect of really good sound when it's coming from the front. Rear speakers should compliment the rest of the system without you being able to really tell that they're there. Far too many people waste money on two sets of OK coaxials for the front and rear when there would be so much more of a positive effect by going with good front components and a decent amplifier for them and leaving the rears as is. The only real use for rear speakers is so you can fade it back if you have rear passengers to bring the music closer to them. I know people are looking for a 'surround sound' type of effect where the music envelopes from all sides but that isn't actually what will sound best for music in the car. When it's being played live onstage, it comes from in front of you and slightly above you. When you play it in your car, to get it closer to sounding like its being played live, it should feel like it's coming from in front and slightly above. Anything you do to bring the rear speakers further into the equation spoils that effect, and your brain doesn't process the sound properly anymore because it doesn't have as direct of a path into your ear. You loose your sense of where the sounds of individual instruments and vocals are supposed to be coming from.
I spent a few years monkeying around with 70-80 dollar coaxials in a couple different vehicles but none of it really did a whole lot for me until I put separates in the front and fed them a good amount of power. Now I can hear those guitar strings being plucked and the 'thunk' from the piano key being pressed. I can close my eyes and picture where every singer and every instrument would be located on stage if I were watching it live. Concentrate on front soundstage, leave the rear as is, drive around like that for a few weeks. You will come to like the sound. PRomise.

The only reason I still have the infinities in the rear is because people ride in the back quite a bit.
