Thanks for the info - I like to have a little flexibiilty once I have the factory system removed. I figured if anything, the Metra/Scosche kits might be a little easier to remove than the factory faceplate. Sounds like the Scosche folks have improved their fit issues somewhat since the first batch they released.

Yeah, you'll hear about both sides of that issue. For me personally, it fits great. Hopefully they've figured out their problems and fixed them. You'll always have little problems like that with new generations of cars/trucks, just like the Weathertech floor mats with our trucks. So what kind of gear are you eying?

In all fairness to Scosche, my two Scosche dash kits that dont fit were one of the first ones out, sounds like they're fitting better now.
great install, i am thinking about doing this to my tundra and am debating to get the dnx 7100 or the new 8120. i am leaning more towards the 7100 for price wise and with the 8120 you cant play video through the usb, one question that i have is, is that with the 7100 did kenwood fix this and allow video files to be played through the usb? any other thought between then 8120 and the 7100. thanks guys

Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for your question. My USB port runs my iPod which is what I use for video. The main differences you'll find between the 7100 and 8120 is that the 8120 has integrated BT where you'll pay around $120 for the box for the 7100, the 8120 runs 5.1, has 2 USB inputs, and has a little nicer GUI. I would seriously consider the 8120 in lieu of the 7100 unless the additional features aren't worth, to you, the money you could save with the 7100. I would have gone the 8120 route but it wasn't out yet when I did my install. But don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 7100.
Ok. Since I am not handy with these types of install, I am going to get Circuit City's Firedog installation to do it for me. Its about $80. I just wasn't sure if I needed to provide them with extra parts.
bbolton, thanks for the help. i am thinking about the 8120, just looking at difference in price and everything. the only thing i dont like about the new one is that i was told by kenwood that they do not plan on making the usb be able to play video files and that if they do, they dont know when, and i beleive that with the 7100, you can play video files through usb, which is kind of nice, i could buy a portable hard drive keep it in my glove box and use that for music and videos, but i guess i could also do the same thing with an ipod as well. also thanks for showing us all the boyo cameras. i didnt even think about doing it that way until i saw yours. before that i was going to get the expensive hard route and do the factory cam install, but the boyo is a better quality anyway. thanks again

Not a problem Jon. I would definitely check out the Boyo, I have absolutely no complaints about mine. I would probably recommend doing an iPod set up in lieu of an external harddrive (I considered this as well) simply for the easier and faster navigation you'd get with the iPod vs. an external hd. My 12,000+ songs would be an absolute nightmare to scroll though on a HD (it's already pretty time consuming!). I think the extra money you'd spend on a 160GB iPod vs. 160 external would be well worth the ease of use. Just my 2 cents though, good luck with the install, can't wait to see some pics!! -Brad
P.S. one more thing to consider. This may not be all 7100's, but the album artwork on my 30gb iPod video worked fine but the headunit required a firmware update to display album artwork from my 160 gb iPod classic...

brad, thanks for the advice, i see what you mean, i bet navigating through the ipod would be much easier than an extrenal hd. so on yoru 7100 and your ipod, you can navigate, play and look through everything right through the head unit and not touching the ipod? i read somewhere that songs are no problem, but if you play videos, you have to start them through the ipod cause apple hasnt supported playing videos outside the unit or something like that. could be a bunch of crap and hope it is, cause that would kinda suck if you had to use the ipod to play things. thanks for the help brad.
Also i see there is a dnx 7120 that i never saw before, are there any differences between this and the 7100? thanks for the help
Jon
Sorry if you already answered this (I didn't read all the posts). I saw that you have Polk DBs, and wanted to know how you liked them. I've been out of the loop on car audio for some time. I remember them being pretty good and considered them when I did my system, and that was about 7 years ago.
I'm trying to decide what to get. I would guess anything is better than the stock non-JBL setup I have now. Just wanted to get some opinions.

Hey Jon, the only reason I have to touch my iPod is to take it out of the truck. The ipod navigation is surprisingly fast, you can navigate seamlessly through artists to albums to playlists, and the headunit fully controls the video. From the main ipod screen you're prompted with a music or video navigation keys. From the video key, you can browse TV shows, movies, etc. subfolders just like you do in itunes. It definitely works flawlessly with my 160gb ipod classic, but I can't speak to the functionality with other ipod versions.

I LOVE my DB's so far. I listen to a variety of music generally at high volume and these things will get a loud and high as you can stand and still maintain their clarity. I'm not an expert in car stereos by any means, but I've redone the audio in every vehicle I've owned and these components, in my opinion, are the best for the money that I've had (I've run Infinity, Boston, and Focal in the past).
brad, thanks for the info. that is the route i am goin to go. it is nice that you can just plug the ipod in and not have to touch it. hopefully one of these soon i will order everything and i will post up some pics when it is all installed. thanks again for all the help.
