Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Need help choosing from 3speaker setups", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've got a DBX8120 installed and the factory speakers are crap. I can only afford speakers right now and not a separate amp or subwoofer. With this being said I need to choose a setup that will give me decent sound with the DNX8120 head unit. I've picked speakers from Boston Acoustics and the ones I chose have been reported to fit the 08 tundra DC by other TS members.
My requirements
- Better Bass than the stock speakers. Setups 1 and 2 worry me because I'm not sure if they will give me more bass than the stock setup with the 6x9's. Remember I am not adding a subwoofer now. Will setup 1 and 2 give me good bass? Because I am going without a sub would setup 3 with the 6x9's give me better bass?

Knowing I am going with the dnx8120 headunit without amplifiers and no sub what would you chose remembering I want good bass?

I have the #3 speakers as well as the Neo Type M Super Tweeters. Driven by a JVC KWAVX810 head unit. I can shut down my amp and sub and IMO the speakers do just fine on their own. Go to a shop that has the 6x5 and the 6x9 on their wall display. Turn on 4 6x5's and then turn on 2 6x5's with 2 6x9's and you will hear a noticeable improvement in bass response. When you can afford an amp and a sub it will be the icing on the cake. Don't know what your rms wattage is with your unit but definately get some good speakers.

If you're not planning on adding any external amp right now, I'd definitely rule out the components in option 2. If you're looking for more bass without adding a sub, I'd go with option 3 or 4. Like the previous poster said, you'll notice the increase in low end frequencies from the larger surface area that the 6x9 woofer can provide. The easiest thing to keep in mind with car audio speakers (including subwoofers) is that the larger the surface area of the woofer, the lower frequency it can hit (generally) and the more air it can push, which equates to louder "bass". The downside to the larger surface area is that you loose some of the response time. This is the reason someone might choose 2 10"s over 1 12" or vice versa. All good options, which makes the choice that much harder!

I have a pair of boston S35's I could put in the dash. Would this be wise with the above combo?

It probably couldn't hurt since you're not getting an amp. It really is a personal preference, you will probably notice an improvement in highs. However, given that you're looking for more bass and aren't adding a sub right now, the highs may drown out the lows a bit.
Are the dash speakers on the tundra 08 speakers or tweeters (standard radio)? I replaced them with boston acoustics s35's and they sound louder but almost like too much sound is coming out of them. I am waiting on my other speakers to get here so the rest of the speakers are stock? I am putting in 6x9 SX95's in the front and 6.5" SX65's in the rear...
I decided to go with Boston Acoustics 6x9 SX95's in the front and Boston Acoustics 6.5" SX65 in the rear. I don't think I am going to use my 3.5" S35's in the dash. We'll see...Should have the speakers in a couple of weeks and will post results.

I definitely wouldn't call them tweeters by any means. They're just little 3.5 speakers with a paper mid woofer and cone "tweeter". Basically just mini versions of the rear door speakers.

They seem really bright compared to the rest of the stock speakers. I think I am going to end up leaving them disconnected when I get my new sx65's and sx95's installed...I doubt I will install the SX35's in the dash.
I installed the boston acoustics sx95 6x9's in the front doors tonight. What a job! Worse than the DNX-8120 install. I used the original speakers, if you can call them that, as a speaker mount. It was a lot of work. I needed to cut the speaker out of the mount. Then I used a table saw to shave about 1/4" to 3/8" off of it to lower the speaker. The Boston acoustics have an annoyingly high tweeter mount. I reused the yellow foam from the original speakers to help seal around the door trim. The first door (passenger) took really long cause I was making it up as I went along to fab the mount out of the old speaker. The drivers door went faster. For the life of me I could not figure out how to unhook the power windor/door lock connector from the door cover. I was pressing and pulling on the release tabs I could see but the connector would not budge and I wasn't going to try and force it. I had to remove the speakers with the door cover still attached to the window/lock harness. That was challenging. I got the speakers in.
I removed the dash speakers clipped the positive wire on the speaker to each and heat shrunk the end. I reinstalled the dash speakers. The system sounds much better without them.
I spent about 45 minutes driving around listening to music that I previously listened to before with the stock speakers. The sound is much better. I have good bass and good tweeter response. I am happy with this setup now and don't feel the need at this point to add an amp or sub woofer. I still need to install the 6.5" sx65's when they arrive. Hopefully that should go easier. I don't expect them to improve the sound that much but will still install them.
I'll post when I get the rears installed and let everyone know if they make a difference.
I got the Boston sx65's installed in the rears yesterday. The install was way easier than the fronts and I used the old speakers as mounts. The system sounds even better and I can turn it up to full volume now without distortion. It is very loud and the bass is really good. I may end up adding a subwoofer one day if I can figure a clean way to get it under the rear seats working around my under seat storage. I don't think I'll ever add an amp for the door speakers as they are loud and clean enough for me.
