Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Steering wheel radio controls", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I found a site that sells Toyota parts... I was browsing and came upon the radio controls for the steering wheel 135.00...
Looks like it just plugs into a harness. I have the 6 CD radio and I am wondering if anyone knows if the plug is in the wheel just waiting for me to buy the controls and install them. Could it be that easy?
No. I looked into this when I was shopping and the Tundra is not pre-wired for the steering wheel controls unless you order the JBL option. It's about ~$1k to retro fit all the parts for this feature if you don't have JBL.

That really blows! I miss my stearing wheel controls. But I don't miss them that much!

Can you post the link to the site that sells them? I'd like to check it out.
Cant hurt to do some investigation, in the time I have been looking at Tundra wiring there appears to be huge variance in what is in the trucks.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal and pop off the steering wheel airbag and see if you have the connections, if you have the ones in the wheel and column the rest is an easy retro if not present.

Are you sure the heaness isn't there? It's not like i'm calling your bluff or anything, I just know it's cheaper to produce vehicles with the same guts and only attach what options are selected.
Example....FJ Cruiser, all harnesses are there no matter what package.

The Service Manager at my dealer checked the schematics and popped the covers on a non-JBL SR5 to check for me. The connections for steering wheel controls were not there. That harness isn't added unless the JBL system is ordered. Wiring for the Bluetooth mic/speaker is also only available with the JBL option.
That's just one example of different wiring options on the Tundra. There are at least three different wiring harnesses for the side view mirrors, as well.
