Default Kenwood DDX512

Hello all I just got this and it is awsome, one question anyone know how to get it to take the firmware upgrade. It runs fine, Kenwoods site has updated software for the unit that is supposed to be downloaded, decompressed, burned to CD then just insert and it updates, problem is it just says "reading...." and does not update?! Anbody got one of these and done the update?

I recently purchased the DDX512 as well. I downloaded the firmware from the kenwood site, decompressed it, burnt it to a dvd (because I didn't have any CDs to write to at the time) and threw it into the unit per the install instructions. It displayed "reading" for just a few seconds and then said "installing" I believe with a little bar indicating how much longer it had. I did see something somewhere about if it continues to say "reading" you can download the file again, burn it again and then try it again... not sure what that would accomplish, but worth a try. At least you know that it is an acknowledged problem for what that's worth.

I have been pretty happy with the unit as well. There have been some random quirks that have come up where it won't let me do something and i hit a bunch of seemingly random buttons and it will let me all of a sudden. Loading a custom background was one instance. It wouldn't let me for the first day or so and after playing with it all of a sudden I was able to load a new image. Unfortunately, I have no idea what it was that I did!

Im sure if you call the manufacturer they will send you an upgrade CD for free, if you are having troubles.

I finally got the firmware to load today. I was having problems with my computer recognizing the ".ruf" file extension. Once I solved that (had to use computer at work) it loaded just as 'BOOM181" stated. I do have a new problem with the backgrounds though; I no longer have the ability to download or choose a background. The interface setting now says "default" rather than "user" and it can't be changed (nothing is highlighted). After being on the phone for over 1/2 hour with the Kenwood rep and numerous re-settings he came to the conclusion that the unit is either defective or something in the firmware was missed during the download. The unit can't be brought back to the original factory settings (version 1.3.0) once you download the firmware, and it won't accept another update. Did anyone else have background issues after the update? Kenwood seems to be at a lose. The rep kept telling me that "default" was not one of the options and it clearly states on page 66 of the instructions that it should say "user"......duh, that's why I called you. Everything else works fine otherwise. Crutchfield will send me another unit but I want to make sure there are not anymore bugs out there that are encountered by any of you readers.

well i cant get the firmware update to load and it seems to be working fine, my wife just put 2000 miles on it going to SD and back. They watched movies and used the ipod without issues so I'm happy! No need for the update as far as I can see.
