Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Viper alarm question", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am thinking about buying a 791xv,it seems to have everything I want. The only bad thing I have heard about this unit is the remotes seem to go out frequently,is this true? Also do I need any bypass modules or anything extra other than the alarm itself?
Yeah I read that also about the remotes going out.I've had the 5900 for 5 mos. and no problems at all.The remote uses 1 AAA battery and it needs replacing about once a month.Unless you're willing to give up a key you'll need the bypass module. I was also told to get a proximity sensor which I haven't so far but I will in the near future.Make sure who ever installs your alarm is certified to install Viper alarms, that's the most important part of the equation.

I have a 2000 Tundra,I was told I wouldn't need any bypass modules.I don't really know a lot about wiring,so if you could please explain.
the 790xv is a great system, ive had it on my 4runner for about 4 years and NO problems, the one u dont want is the new 7900 ITS A POS. i had it for a few months and the keypad went out. im still waiting for wonderful DEI to send my replacement transmitter.
but the 790 is bulletproof. its a good choice IMO

If your key doesn't have the chip built in then no you wouldn't need the by-pass.Is your key all metal or does it have a plastic cover? If its all metal then you don't have the chip.If its plastic then you probably have the chip.If you're uncertain call your dealership for them to verify what type of key you have.
The only difference between the 7900 & 5900 is the transmitter is more animated for the 7900,is in color and you pay an extra 100.00.

I have one key that has a black rubber/plastic end.The other key they gave me was an all metal key.I have actually contacted Viper, and they told me to look up expresskit.com for any modules I might need for my make and model. They don't even have one listed,so I would love to know what exactly is going on.
I had the 790 and the remote died just after warranty expired. Replaced it with a 791 remote and that did the same thing. Ended up selling the car before I replace the remote again. It's $80-100 to replace each time.

If it's professionally installed you get a limited lifetime warranty. However, if you read the fine print in the guide you discover that the lifetime warranty is only for the unit itself. The remote and all accessories are only for one year.

I have the same warranty,so I'll have to wait another 7 mos. to see if my remote dies.Did you get the proximity sensor? If so, how much did you pay?I was qouted 120.00.
