OK guys. I am 55 years old, aged challenged and sport a crew cut.
I have not kept up to date with the latest and greatest stereo equipment for our Tundras. I do not have an ipod or any other type of musical input device. However, I grew up on CCR and Led Zepplin and know that the head unit output wattage and more importantly the speakers in my 2010 DC really are pathetic. It is like I went back 25 years to the crappy radio I used to have in my '84 Silverado. My hearing is shot but I cannot believe how poor the speaker quality is in my truck. My '06 TACO stock radio was far and above the level of the Tundra's.
I have been reading the posts and doing multiple searches. I have the most basic of questions, I cannot tell if my HU is a JBL or non-JBL. I have a Rock Crawler and whatever system came with that package. It has the XM radio and steering wheel controls with Blue Tooth (not sure what that means).
Can an amp (like the Alpine F300) be hooked up directly to the stock speaker leads? And then change out the door speakers? I think they are 6X9 in the front and 6 1/2 in the back.
I do not need subs, just more / louder / cleaner sound for my vintage rock.
Suggestions, comments for a 2010 aftermarket speakers and amp?
Thanks.

Check the upper right hand corner of the HU. If it's a JBL you'll see the logo there. Also look under the passengers seat for the JBL amp...... but it you have steering wheel controls then sounds like you have the upgraded JBL system.
Yep, that is where I looked for the logo on the HU. There is no JBL logo on the upper right and no amp under the passenger seat. Seems odd that you get steering wheel controls in a non JBL system. Go figure.

Agree how absolutly crumby and unlistenable the base system is, it really brings down the whole vehicle.
Yes agree with this guy the head unit MUST go. It"s the starting point of the whole system. If its not up to spec then the system will be a series of comprimises that add up to so-so sound quality. An amp or 2 would also be recomended, heck I turned off the noisey, hot internal amp in the head unit and just run power from the amps. get the best 6.5" component set you can afford, I like the Focal line, the poly glass speakers are not too expensive, sound great and can handle some good power. Some kind of LFE solution would also be a good idea. Dynamat those big doors too. There is also Sat. radio, I-pod, HD radio, nav. bluetooth......
