Default 3 way front stage in a Tundra

Looking at possibly upgrading from my Hertz HSK 165s to a 3 way setup of some sort. As of right now tweeters are in the sail panels, mids are in the doors. But Im really looking for a 3 way setup incorporating a solid midbass driver up front that's good to 55-60 HZ so I can tune my sub lower.

What I was also hoping to do was bring a 4 inch or so mid range into the mix and make use of the dash openings so that the midrange is no more than 6-8 inches from the tweeter. The goal is moving the bass notes solidly in front of me, dedicating one set of drivers to the mid range frequencies and at the same time getting better imaging and more solid vocals by putting the mid range and tweeter close to eachother.

Im tempted because it would seem like a simple thing to just throw some mids into the openings on the corners of the dash, put a 6.5-8 inch midbass in my door openings, new tweeters in the holes I already have in the sail panels, and be done with it without having to cut any more new holes in the interior than I already did for the tweeters. However I am leary of the aiming difficulties involved in making the proper use of windshield reflections. Just wondering if anybody on here with a GEN2 Tundra has a serious 3 way front stage. Specifically the midbass will be in the doors and will be the biggest I can find/afford, but I'm wondering where people are placing the tweeter and midrange, whether they're making use of the dash or putting the midranges higher in the doors, etc... I have my tweeters in the sail panels right now aimed towards the center of the truck but am open to all suggestions, including replacing the drilled sail panels and moving the tweeters to the windshield panels.

Any suggestions or input? It's an 09 Crewmax, non-JBL, with currently disconnected dash speakers in each corner and the empty cenner channel opening below the clock.

Check this thread: Worklog - Road RagE II (2007 Tundra)

Rage did a 3 way set up in his crew max. Its a long thread, but well worth the read. Tons of great info in there.

i have been debating the same thing. my initial thought is to put the midrange driver in the a piller next to the sail panel. seems like this would point the speaker in the same direction as the tweet, i am just not sure how much room there is to work with behind the panel.

as for the mid bass in the door, depth is the main issue. realistically, i think between spacing the speaker and possible the window frame track there is in the neighborhood of 3.5" of depth to work with. when you do find an 8" mid bass that is not too deep, then you run into the problem of the factory 6x9 square grill that is built into the door panel...which doesnt even line up square over the speaker. i am not sure how you would find the room to keep the speaker from bouncing off of the back of the door panel without cutting it...

hopefully more people will chime in...would love to have a great 3 way front stage myself...

seems like that would get in the way of the E Brake. and your still stuck w/ the each of the 3 way components being more than 12" away from each other and pointed in different directions...

Putting the Mid in the Dash location does have its problems. Time alignment is necessary and the reflections off the glass can change the tone of the sound as well as the direction.

Im going to be putting my 3" mid and tweeter on my A pillar shooting to the opposite side of the truck. I have used velcro and set them up that way and it sounded tons better.

If you can aim your dash mount mid, that would help too to keep the direct effect off the glass down.

i agree. i think i am going to leave the tweeter in the sail and put the midrange in the a piller...they both appear to aim just to the inside of the driver/passenger. the midbass should be fine in the door. not sure what to do about center speaker yet.

one other note...the nav voice appears to be to come from the driver dash speaker only. i am not sure how the JBL DPS directs sound, bu that could turn out to be an issue when making changes...

eharri3,

I am planning my 3 way setup too and i am also very tempted to use the factory locations so that it can be a true stealth install. Are you planning to run a passive or active setup?
