I asked this question in the sequoia section, but figure this is a better place to ask...
I have factory overheaddvd player. Looking to replace jbl headunit with pioneer double din dvd. Will this mess up the factory overheaddvd?
I have gone a couple places and they all say, we can charge you 100 bucks to try it out. Or we can just go with the install and if it doesnt work, you can just buy a new dvd system. -Not gonna happen
Anyone have ideas or experience? please and thank ya
Try crutchfield.com. You can enter your setup into the site or just give them a call. A new HU shouldn't mess you up though.
Just went to crutchfield. Couldn't find anything that has an option for overhead dvd player. I have been told by many people that it will mess with the dvd player. The dvd player sends the signal to the headunit, which then sends it to the overhead dvd. A new head unit is not programmed to do that...from what I have seen in other posts on here and what the local audio shops say.
You should check and see if there is an AUX input on the factory DVD. If there is, you can run RCA's from the Pioneer unit to the DVD player, and play the DVDs from the headunit. Just finished that install on my 08 Sequoia.
I am not questionining your knowledge I just don't think I understand. When you say AUX input on factory DVD do you mean on the screen or player? I know the player has just a solid set of about 15 wires coming out the back. No input or output. The back of the JBL stereo has just a bunch of wires coming in together. As for the screen I do not know if there is an input in there. The HU I want has an A/V input on back, but no output. So how do I wire the DVD player to play through the back screen but control volume on new HU? Can either of you explain a little deeper what you mean?
I don't know that you can. The way I have it is a Pioneer F900BT, which will play a DVD, with a simple RCA out hooked into the RCA input (AUX input) on the overhead monitor. It is the Toyota aftermarket overhead unit though, so I don't know about factory. I am able to watch a DVD on the front, the overhead, or both. The overhead is effectively a monitor, and the DVD video and sound are being processed by the head unit.
Kind of. So do you put the dvd in the head unit to play on the rear monitor? Or do you have a the toyota AM dvd player to play on it? I guess I need to see if the overhead screen has an input. I get the feeling it does not because of the type of cords, but I could be wrong. Is there any way you can tell me what is wired to what? Like dvd player to HU to monitor? Or even a quick sketch in paint? Thanks a ton, I really want to make this happen.
I wish I knew. I didn't have the factory DVD player. The overhead unit is self contained, with an FM transmitter. My AUX input was on the back of the mounting behind the monitor, and had a little black glossy covering over the inputs. I just pulled down on it to get it off. Looks almost like a remote input. I think to get your new head unit to run the overhead monitor, the factory DVD player itself will be useless. The overhead monitor will just be a monitor, and the new head unit will play the DVD, and nothing at all will go through the factory DVD player. That's how mine is set up. I can watch a DVD on the front and the rear at the same time, because the rear is connected through a single yellow RCA cable to the Pioneer head unit, which is playing the DVD. 1 DVD, two screens playing it. I have no idea on the wiring.
I will tell you that you need to make sure you use the PAC TATO harness if you have the JBL system. The Scosche and Metra units are garbage on an 08 or later. Also, DO NOT hook up the orange and whit wire on the TATO harness when you install it! It will blow out your LED lights on the buttons, and you have to replace the gauge cluster. Just did that over the weekend. Sucks.
So, as a summary, I have a Pioneer F900BT nav unit for a head unit, and an RCA hooked into the video monitor output on the back of the F900BT that goes directly to the overhead monitor. I play the DVD on the headunit, and it plays on the back monitor, and the audio is controlled through the head unit. No sound at all goes to the monitor itself, only through the car speakers and the Pioneer unit.
I hope that helps. I know it's frustrating as hell! I can take pictures over the weekend if you think that would help you.
Looks like this could be a starting point. I do not mind ditching the stock dvd player to get it working. But, it sounds like you have a gen2 seq? You have nothing in your garage. On the gen 1 there are a/v inputs under the rear cupholders. Do you know if I will lose those by replacing the HU and installing the way you say? If pics wouldn't be too much work I would appreciate anything. As of now I am getting an exaust tommorow, so this is not a huge rush. Within the next couple weeks I hope to start working on this.
I have a 2008 Limited. I'll post pictures in the a.m. The DVD player is the self-contained unit that the dealership installs, and plays on the radio via FM modulator.
I've got an Alpine H/U up front and kept my rear DVD player too.
As of now, there is no connection between the two. I can run my front head unit, and rear passengers can watch a DVD with the wireless headphones that came with the truck. Thats it. The rear DVD player cannot play audio through the truck speakers, and it cannot display what is on the Alpine screen up front.
I have never, ever wished this was any different. When I first had everything done, I feared that I would want the two integrated somehow, but I can honestly say, after about 9 months of having it like this, I am just fine with how it is. The only time I ever use the rear DVD player is when my son is back there, and I'd rather not have to listen to his movies anyway.
If you're hell bent on having them integrated, then it would have to go something like this:
Head unit output (probably exists)==>RCA Cables===>Rear DVD Input (which may or may not exist, probably not)
Basically, the only way I can figure to do this right would be to rip out the factory Rear DVD unit and replace it with an aftermarket flip-down unit that has inputs and outputs.

This was a project I was going to wait on and save up some money, but both your HUs look amazing. I may go with what swing says. Powell...I don't have the nice aftermarket toyota screen. I have no inputs on it. Swing, I think I like your idea of just playing the rear only through the headphones. I will see if that is more doable with the install guys. But, one question for the both of you: did your dvdplayer or overhead screen get power from the toyota HU? Mine does. If yes, how did you power them? Thanks guys...I am really looking forward to dropping another $700 on my seq hahaha
