I'm about to move into Phase 3 of my Audio System upgrade.
Currently, I have a Kenwood head unit, Polk speakers at all 4 corners, and a pair of 8" Rockford Fosgates in the Q-Logic enclosure that goes in the well under the right-rear seat. Speaker amp is under the driver's seat and the sub amp is under the passenger seat. These are the 60/40 bench seats; not the buckets.
The Rockfords are nice, but I want something to put out some deeper bass. The problem is, where do I put bigger subs?
How much space is there behind the rear seatback? Is there enough room to install some of the new shallow subwoofers? That would be great but I'm doubting it. Removing the rear seats entirely is not an option because I need them; either for groceries, the dog or an occasional human passenger.
The other possibility would be to put a big subwoofer box in the bed. I have a topper on the back which stays on all year so weather should not be a problem. But my question is, how would the subs sound from inside the cabin if they are mounted in the bed and pointing towards the rear?
I don't know Salty, something tells me that you would be better off with the 8's in the cab. I don't know much about this subject and low frequency is low frequency, but would the sound not have to travel through two shields (cab sheet metal, and bed sheet metal/topper) by the time it gets to you? Again, I have no idea about this subject but just seems to me the true sound would be, not as virgin so to speak, by the time it got to you. Just my couple penny's worth.
BTW, do you have pics of the two 8's you have installed by chance? I'm assuming their in the 2001 that is in your "my garage".
Cut out the cab wall/bed man!!!! I will be doing this down the road with my truck..If you do, I would run a minimum of (4) woofers since you will have the room to do it. That is my plan. They make boots so you can boot the area..Or you can just use port tubes to port into the truck.

Good idea if I was going full-blown custom, but I need to keep this thing practical for every day use. So major cutting is not something I want to do. I still need to be able to haul firewood and bags of manure from time to time.
In that case put the subs in the bed and jump in back there and crank it when you want to enjoy the system. For you to actually enjoy those subs the soundwaves have to somehow travel through the cab. People will put subs and speakers in the bed without a blowthrough but these are normally show vehicles where the goal is to play music for people outside the truck while it's parked.

I had a buddy do this to his truck, the subs in the bed with cover. the sound was disappointing. it sounds like the guy behind you is bumping, very muffled. the only way to make it workout with minimal damage is to run port tubes from bed to cab as marky mark suggested. maybe two pieces of 3" pipe and some creative sealing. Another option, I removed the "40" seat bottom behind the driver side and put my 12 there. still had the "60" portion for passengers.

Hmm.... There's a thought.
But back to one of my original questions, how much space is there behind the rear seat back? Would it accommodate one of the new shallow (say, 3-inch deep) woofers?
It doesn't look like enough room to me. even shallow mounts need some space behind the magnet to radiate heat. I thought about using washers/longer bolts to space the seat forward, seen a thread on this a few years back. makes a little room on the lower portion but I don't think its enough. I think the thread was about changing the backseat angle so its not so upright. I'm trying to think of an option for you since I know you're helpful. would a box on the floor between driver seat and rear seat work out? when I removed the 40 section the only downside was it blocked the rear door speaker a bit.

hey saltydog! Forgot to tell you, if you build a new box, try to have either the frontwall or backwall of the box angled. It produces a better bass range that way. I forget the science but its something to do with breaking up the resonance effect that you get with a rectangular box. also, avoid cube-like dimensions. heres a pic of mine, it fit in place of the "40" side before I yanked my seat. I'm waiting to find carpet at pickapart out of a toyota to cover it and the back wall of my cab.

Looks nice, but I'm still not sure I want to sacrifice a rear seat.
AAAHHHH MAN! markymark why do you gotta show yours! Your trucks too sick! Just not fair!
I saw yours on cardomain a while back, so clean I don't want to look, but I have to.
Thanks saltydog, I move it to the side when I ride with my dog. If you're going for a shallow 10, you don't need all that airspace. My sub has a ridiculous magnet so I had to work with it.

Thanks bro! That is actually not my setup, but one of my plans if I do not cut the bed out. I gotta have more bass!

Well I have DD (Digital Design) 8 inch sub in my truck. Talk about rattle your brains! Check out ddaudio.com. But I doubt that enclosure you have will be enough for one of the dd 8's. Have you thought about just getting a box and sitting it in the seat. That way if your gonna take a trip with people sitting in the back you can just disconnect the sub. BTW a 10 inch pioneer premier shallow sub requires .7 cubic feet for a ported box.
