Default The JBL system in the 2004 models

Hey, just wondering, can an aftermarket headunit be hooked up to the JBL system? Would that require major work? Are the speakers powered by a separate amp with the JBL system?

I just tried to do this yesterday. As far as i can tell tel JBL amp is controlled by a data bus-amp turn on and volume control. So gonna have to bypass the factory amp.
