Question Aux Input Adapter for JBL 16848 head unit?

Anyone have any luck using an auxiliary input adapter (Blitzsafe, PIE, etc.) with the Toyota/JBL 16848 head unit (86120-0C130)? This is the head unit in a 2004 Double Cab with JBL 8-speaker system w/o rear seat features. I already learned the hard way that this head unit and amp combination cannot work separately because it is a digital system (see previous posts).

I am trying to use an XM Commander and feed in the full digital signal to the head unit instead of using the FM modulation on the antenna wire, which has been less than impressive. Blitzsafe and PIE claim that you can bring in a signal, in this case on the RCA outputs from the XM Commander, and make the head unit think it's a CD changer or whatever. Can a CD changer be added to the 16848?

I have e-mailed everyone who makes or sells these things but have not been encouraged by the few generic responses I've received. It seems nobody knows how to deal with these new digital systems. They keep referring to CD changer controls and a 12-pin connector, which I think is the analog system. Any help will be appreciated.

Is it just the amp that can't work separately or the head unit as well? I'd like to keep the head unit but upgrade the amp and speakers if possible.

Consider them a matched set. If you replace one, do the other, unless you want to take the speaker level outputs from the amp through converters to a outboard amp or mod the connector to the exiting amp and create line-level outputs.

That really sucks, I like the stock look of the head unit. All the aftermarket head units are too crazy looking for my tastes.

Metra makes an adapter that works PERFECTLY. That whole lot about digital stuff is BS in my opinion. 70-8113 is the part number. I have a Kenwood deck in my Sequoia as we speak and it sounds PERFECT. When you are playing a DVD on the screen the surround is great!

So how does the head unit use the aux input? I understand how it plugs in and all that, but what input does it use? Also, what's with the 4 plugs? Black/White, Green/purple?

Default Metra 70-8113 will not fit JBL 16848 head unit

Guys:

We're talking about two different systems here. From what I've gathered on this website (some of the info from a guy who used to work on these systems at JBL) and my own personal experience of trial and error, Toyota/JBL changed the design of the premium JBL systems to digital instead of analog, sometime around the 2003 model year. 2001 Sequoias for example would have the analog system, while the 2004 Tundra Double Cab w/ JBL has the digital system... different connectors and different operation.

I can tell you without a doubt that the Metra 70-8113 will not physically plug in to the JBL 16848 head unit found in some of the 04 DC. The Metra connector looks just like a Scosche TA02 which I tried and returned because it would not plug in. See attached pictures... the "A" and "B" corresponds to the wiring diagram found in the Garage. (Ignore the dates; digital camera was screwed up.) If you want a connector that will plug in, there's a Scosche TA03. It will physically plug in to connector "A" in the vehicle, but you can't make an aftermarket head unit drive the factory JBL amp, so don't waste your time. See previous posts on that subject:

04 Double Cab w/JBL replacing head unit

If you want to verify, pull your head unit out and look at the connectors. Two screws when you tilt the A/C vents, 3 screws behind the knobs, and 4 bolts holding the unit into the dash.

What we're trying to determine here is whether an auxiliary input adapter like those made by Blitzsafe, PIE, etc., will:
a) physically plug in to one of the connectors at the back of the 16848, and
b) operate properly with the 16848 head unit and make it think you're adding a CD changer or whatever

Heck yeah, let's see what'cha got! Just to confirm, is this the 16848 head unit with 8 speakers ($460 option on your window sticker, 86120-0c130 part no. label on the head unit) or the standard system with 6 speakers? I'd love to see the back of the head unit with everything plugged in, but you probably have it all put back together. Anything you can post would be great. Thanks for the info!

Default Aux Input Options

Bubba,
I installed the XM Commander unit in my truck a couple of months ago. I had to connect it via the wired FM modulator as the final solution. I desparately wanted to connect it using an AUX input adapter such as Blitzsafe or PIE but that is currently not an option.

After researching this for a very long time, here is what I found:

The primary consideration is if your unit is the 6 disc in dash changer or the single disc unit.
- If you have the 6 disc in dash changer, there are NO PORTS IN THE BACK OF YOUR UNIT TO CONNECT AN AUX INPUT ADAPTER. The 12 pin port in the back of these units is for connecting steering wheel control. Toyota does not list an external CD changer as an option for this unit.
- If you have the single disc in dash unit (or possible no CD at all), you are in luck. There is a port in the back of your unit to accept AUX input from CD changers or anything else. According to Blitzsafe, they are working on an adapter for the 2003-2004 models, so it may not be available yet.

My knowledge on this subject involves 2000-2002 models but I am willing to bet that the same holds true for the newer ones as well.

Other people on other web sites sometimes say things contrary to the above but I have found that they were simply missinformed. Car installers at many shops have said that an AUX input adapter can be installed in my truck but they turned out to be wrong as well.

After initially posting this respone, I realized that you were the one that posted photos of your radio unit. It appears that you have the single disc system which means that you will be able to direct connect your XM. The back of your unit also has an additional connector that mine doesn't have which is most likely the AUX input port. Lucky you.

Enjoy your XM radio.

UPDATE: After looking at the PIE web site, it does appear that there may be a direct connect option for the 6 disc in dash changer unit. This didn't exist when I was looking for this a few months ago.
It is still odd that Toyota does not list an external CD changer as an option for this unit but does for the single disc radio unit. I have still NEVER heard of anyone getting a direct connection for the 6 disc unit. I'll do a little more research to see if I can finally get a direct connection for my 6 disc unit and the XM Commander and report back with the findings.

Default Pie install

Bubba17,
I will attempt to attach my install photos, YES the PIE adapter plugs into the twelve (12) port on the back of the radio. The steering wheel controls still function as well as the single CD player.

Default JBL or factory?

I need some help here. Is the DJ option worth it? 2 more speakers and an amp it sounds like. Is the sound that much fuller? I have 2 trucks here and 1 has it and 1 doesn't. I'm kinda hung up on it for some reason and would appreciate the input. Thanks!

Bringing up the issue again. My 2004 JBL unit in my double cab has a model # of A56830 and I am trying to find out before I rip the unit out if I can use one of those P.I.E. harnesses. Do you have any suggestions?

thanks

My 03 with steering wheel controls now has a PIE toy03 adaptor for AUX input. Works great. I have the 6 speaker system with in-dash changer.
