Looking for some advice...
I have a 2004 Tundra DC with 8 JBL speakers, DVD package, and the stock HU. I'm not totally happy with the HU and wondering if anyone has installed a replacement stereo and had it work for them. I'm hoping to have something with an on-board aux input (front or rear, doesn't matter) and hoepfully it will interface with the DVD and steering wheel controls without a problem. What I hope to do is replace the HU without having to mess with the amps, speakers, etc.
Has anyone done the HU upgrade? If so what make and model is your stereo?
Your input is much appreciated!

My Tundra also came with the JBL setup, diff was mine came with CD/Cass player. I just had the Pioneer AVIC-N1 installed about 4 weeks ago. This unit has DVD playback as well as Navigation. The Nav unit was the selling point for me. I do however plan on putting a 15" drop down monitor in the back to use for football season, tailgating that is. Everything also fits inside the dash. Nothing to hide anywhere else. GPS Antenna is less than an inch in diameter and is located on the dash in the far corner. You don't have to worry about having that extra ant on the outside of the truck. I did however add a 4 channel Eclipse amp for more power to those factory JBL's. I am getting ready to add MB Quart Comp. to the doors. Also 10" Diamond Audio sub in the Jack compartment and JL Audio 250 for a little bass fill.
Your steering wheel controls can also be utilized as well by using an interface to control the same functions that the remote would.

Hopefully this will help.
Do the steering wheel controls become useless when you remove the JBL radio?

Yes they do. You can get adapters that will interface your factory steering wheel controls with your new aftermarket head unit. I don't recall who makes them, but you might be able to find them if you do a search of this site.
Like Jhamilton1 mentioned, it uses an IR transmitter to control the functions on the new HU like the remote control that comes with it would. It won't work if the new aftermarket head unit doesn't have a remote control though.

The part that allows the steering wheel controls to work with an aftermarket HU is the PAC SWI-X.
You can get them retail for $70-80 or on fleabay for $40-50 shipped.
I have the same vehicle and I am doing the following:
-Kenwood DDX7015
-Kenwood 6 disc changer
-Kenwood XM radio adapter and XM Radio tuner.
- PAC SWI-X to keep factory steering wheel controls.
I chose this one because in my personal opinion having the head unit 'up' out of the dash does not look attractive to me. The Kenwood is double din and slides down to alllow access to the cd slot.
I believe the Eclipse models do this as well.
Nav is not a big selling point for me. I was born and raised in H-Town and rarely travel (driving) so I do not really need Navigation for around town.
I also have already completed the following:
Single 10" sub under driver's seat with MTX 180W amp, Image Dynamic IDQ6 (2Ohm) in the front doors and Vifa 6.5" Mid (4OHm) in the rear doors.
I still have the factory JBL HU and Amp powering everything.
I am working towards convincing the finance commitee (wife) that the Kenwood stuff is beneficial and that it is needed!
Good luck with the "Finance Commitee". The CFO of my finance commitee is a hard sell also. Let me know how that goes...
Also, if you can let me know via private message (this thread might be old and done by the time you get project funding approval) if and/or how the sound improves. I'm a Kenwood fan and will also be looking to install something like the model KDC-MP925 . It looks to be the same as your model, feature wise, but without the LCD. I'll be leaving the factory amps where they are.
Any future input you have would help me out a lot.
Thanx!
p.s. - I just read the thread that was referenced earlier in ths thread and it mentions that the JBL HU and the factory amps work in tandem with each other. I guess the JBL amps will not work with any other HU. Are you also going to replace the amps? If not, I'd be curious to know if the system does in fact work or not with the new Kenwood.

Reason: More info to add
Chris,
Since you have replaced the speakers can you tell me what the wattage is on the various speakers (if it is, in-fact, listed on the speaker)? This way I can plan out what to get as far as HU and amplifiers go. Also, can I drive all 8 speakers off of one amp?
Thanx,
-Aaron
If you plan on keeping the JBL Amp there are some things that need to be taken into consideration:
- The JBL front door speakers are 2 Ohm.
- The rear door speakers are 4 Ohm.
If you try and replace a 2 Ohm driver with a 4 Ohm driver, the amp will be presented with 1/2 the load and sound like crap.
I am using some Image Dynamic IDQ62 (2 Ohm) for the front, and some Vifa 6.5" mids in the rear.
I am looking at putting an 8" in the door (A DEI speaker that I cannot remember the model) I need to confirm what all will be needed to make them work. This will happen when I put in the Kenwood system and add the MTX Amp for mids/highs.
I am also replacing the Toyota Tweeters with a pair of Kicker ND25 1" silk dome that I have from many years ago. This will be divided from the front door mid by a passive network that I have no idea where I am going to put.
I will post some more pics once I get everything done. I am hoping to have it in my February or so.
One more question to end my quest... I want to avoid rewiring my entire truck so here is the question: If I purchase and install a stereo with 50 x 4 watts max per channel and bypass the factory JBL amps will that be enough to sufficiently drive the speakers? Or will the sound be weak and gutless? It's a shame to have to totally bypass a quality amp because it won't interface with an aftermarket HU.
50x4 will be a good amp to power the door speakers.
You can tap all of the speaker wires at the amp (on the driver's side back wall).
You are right about having to dump an amp/ HU just because of use of a propreitary communications protocol.
I would let Toyota know about it in your owner's survey. Not that it would do any good.
I am actually content with the volume of my factory system after I deadened the doors and added the sub for low end. What I am lacking is the ability to play DVD-R with MP3's on them and to have XM/Sirius integrated into one piece. I do not want to 'add-on' one of the XM roady things. It does not look as smooth.
